A degree in computer science and seven years of experience working as a computer programmer on Wall Street in the years leading up to the financial crisis has left her "stridently opposed" to the construction of data centers, she said. The frenzy around artificial intelligence and amount of debt being used to construct the centers reminds her of the atmosphere around the time of the 2008 crisis, she said. The Department of Homeland Security recently purchased a giant warehouse in Hagerstown, Maryland, where they planned to install an ICE detention center. DHS requested input from the public (as they are obligated to do) about building a detention center on a 100 year floodplain. Likely to rush this through over the outcry of the community, DHS only gave the public 6 days to weigh in on this ICE detention center AND they are doing it in the middle of a DHS shutdown. If you look at the web page where you're supposed to submit your comments by Thursday, March 5th at close of business, there is a big red banner that says, notice we may not be monitoring this page due to the DHS shutdown. 2 action items: #1: email ICESUSTAINABILITY@ICE.DHS.GOV and tell them six days isn’t enough time to weigh in, they need to extend the comment period to at least 30 days AND hold public hearings. #2: Go to bit.ly/NoMDCamp and you will get a template comment that you can customize and send to DHS.
