"I was thinking today, and feel free to skip this bit cause it’s just me doing some bullshit musings. But submitting a piece to only 1-3 places makes rejections hurt so much more for some reason. For example, I had a piece I loved sent to 2 places. When those folks rejected me, it hurt quite a bit. But a couple months ago, I sent out a collections to like…24 different lit mags. I got rejections left and right but barely noticed because I knew it had plenty more chances. Then, last week, it was accepted to one of my long-time dream publications. I think it’s worth scheduling an hour or so to submit a piece to many mags at once, especially when targeting tough places. Not only does it increase your chances, but it super takes the sting out of those rejections (at least for me). "

My apologies to Olivia Rodrigo, I was unfamiliar with the depth of her rock history game. “bad idea right?” is all 00s garage rock revival, from the tight riff that dominates the song to her vocal take — sing-talking and even the inflections — and, of course, that chorus: “Seeing you tonight / It’s a bad idea right?” Dan Nigro, her trusty co-songwriter and producer, was part of the band As Tall As Lions in the 2000s, so he is no stranger to that era. Olivia, meanwhile, is no stranger to madness, but last we heard her wield it, it was madness out of anger (”good 4 u”). This here, then, is the kind of madness when you think yourself in circles and all answers start to suspiciously look wrong and right at the same time. The only way to find out is to do it. Though the song is a little too much momentum and buildup seemingly going nowhere, I’m sort of glad to hear her in this mode; “Vampire” sounded still sounded too Lorde-esque to me at points.
