Here lies the inherent paradox that many of us British (especially English) people feel and struggle with. I can’t think of another country where even the mere presence of our nation’s flag is synonymous with racism, exclusion, and discrimination. Being English is not only uncool, it’s really fucking embarrassing.

Through a careful manipulation of the narrative from collectivism, i.e. ‘we’re all one’ to individualism, we’ve allowed ourselves, as a nation, to become obsessed with our own interests. For example, turning social housing or water from a human right to a profitable institution, we shift the focus away from creating a better life for all, into creating the very best life for the chosen few.

This attitude also feeds into the narrative that ND people cannot simply exist in normal society. We are bad people, who do bad things. Autistic people do not abuse because they ‘don’t understand the signals’, if they do abuse, it’s because they are abusers— it has nothing to do with autism.

There is so much we can’t control, so, of course, we seek to control other things as a coping mechanism for the uncertainty of our daily lives. It’s the control freaks who get the washing done, make sure there’s bread for toast in the morning, craft World Book Day costumes, and keep track of bills and savings… The control freaks often have to control things, because without them, everything will fall apart— that was certainly the case for my own mam.
