Hi everyone, First, I want to thank everyone who has reached out to me and my family following the passing of my mother a few days ago. The messages, phone calls, and kind words have meant a great deal to us, and we are very grateful for the support. I want to provide some clarification on the current situation regarding the closure of the Kentville library. I want to make it clear that there was no communication between myself, as Mayor of Kentville, and the Annapolis Valley Regional Library (AVRL) after January 2026. On January 21, there was a meeting with all of the funding partners where AVRL asked municipalities to provide an additional 100% in funding over the next two years (50% increase each year). Kentville unanimously approved that request, as did the Municipality of West Hants and Annapolis Royal. The other 5 partners all agreed to increases ranging from 26% to 67%. I also think it is important for residents to know that the lease for the Kentville branch was up for renewal this year. The annual lease cost is approximately $99,000, with the Town of Kentville and the Municipality of the County of Kings each paying half. The Town had been in communication with the property owner regarding a renewal and there was a willingness to continue the lease arrangement. Based on those discussions, there was every expectation that the Kentville branch would continue operating in its current location. On May 25, 2026, the AVRL Board met and voted to close five library branches. The Town of Kentville has one councillor who serves as our representative on that board, yet at no point was Town Council advised that the board would be considering a decision of this magnitude.

Kaya, a large-breed dog that is a mix of Tibetan Mastiff, Chow Chow, and St. Bernard, has been the beloved subject of an online campaign, dubbed "Free Kaya," over allegations Piker trained Kaya with a shock collar that transmits painful stimuli as part of behavior training. At one moment, Piker silently stood over Kaya and gestured with a finger for her to return to the house after relieving herself. Later, Kaya was observed being walked and driven by a woman leaving Piker's home.

People who haven't filled it out by that time will start being prodded by mail, phone, or if they really drag out the process, a personal visit from a census worker sometime in June. "In mid-July, non-responding households with a mailing address will receive a final reminder letter informing them of their legal obligation to complete the census questionnaire and the possible consequences of failing to do so," a StatsCan spokesperson told CBC News.
In the near term, Familiar Machines plans to market the robot to older adults who want some of the benefits of a pet without the responsibilities, as well as consumers looking to support their own well-being. Over time, the company hopes to license its AI to other companies.
