So I did end up remembering something about Marathon on my recent trip but after the presentation I gave Which is that there WAS mention of a fungal infection in og marathon I just forgot it because it got largely dropped The S'ct'lac'tr Notably, mechanical units were immune to it back in Marathon 2 though So it being able to infect Darius is definitely some more potent strain Also notably it would have been a Halo Flood type of thing, with the virus reanimating corpses and infecting living beings as a parasite So Entirely possible that our new 'runner hunter' type enemies are not only fungus zombies, the fungus we've been seeing might be related to the s'ct'lac'tr

If it helps with your appreciation of the new series as well, I'd say to consider that Dante's 'humanity' in the new series is his ability to endure the trials of life and retain his carefree attitude, that the central thesis seems to be one of all people truly being able to share and empathize in moving on with our hurt. I did think Eva's talk in episode 7 was a good thesis statement for the show, and keeping in mind that this new Dante isn't as strong as the one from the games, his new strength is his ability to endure hardship and keep on going. So him losing fights but never giving up sets him as more of a traditional struggling protagonist in a world with major powers moving against one another, which does match with the way they were setting him up in season 1. He's not DMC Dante, but he's still A Dante, and it seems like they want to explore what that means. Dante's capacity to be hurt and embrace it vs Vergil's desire to chase power for the sake of never hurting again. It's a different spin, but I do think it's a solid enough thesis that I want to let them cook.
