Historical writings tell us that witches could take the form of other animals and beasts, to hide from mortals and move about safely. The most common we read of being cats, toads or hares. This is only partly true. For a witch to shapeshift, she must have inherited the ability through the bloodline of her family (werewolves are a rare example of this genetic trait), or she must do so with magic. The power required for a witch to transform herself from human to creature is enormous. For those who are not naturally blessed with this ability, this is a path which few can attempt, let alone complete successfully. The gift of shifting is passed down but the type of animal that the person shifts into is not. During their teens, a witch will start having vivid dreams, and those visions will indicate what animal they will eventually transform into. Some rare individuals are able to shift into more than one creature, but you will find those only once in every five generations. A witch will show traits of the animal they transform into from their first metamorphosis. Eyes will grow larger, ears change shape and hair will often take on a different colour. There is a colourful and robust species of dragon which you will find at the foot of the northern mountains where it is rocky and arid. They stand a foot tall at the shoulder and have small wings (although they don't fly) and are capable of breathing fire. Despite their small size, this dragon has only one predator, larger dragons. All other creatures give this plucky little dragon a wide berth because of their fearlessness and territorial nature. They build nests on sheer rock faces which keeps the eggs safe from scavengers and opportunists when they are away hunting. Pygmies are technically flightless, but they do use their small wings to glide as they leap from rock to rock, using their firey breath to soften their landings. They do this by pointing their hot blasts towards the ground which helps to slow their speed. During mating season they gather on the mountainsides at dusk where the males will compete with each other at who can breathe the most intense fireballs. It is quite an impressive thing to witness and can be seen from many miles away.

Deep in Strangehollow’s southern lands, the weather is gloriously warm and balmy. The climate is humid; however, due to the offshore breezes it is generally never warmer than thirty degrees centigrade. The creatures that live there thrive in the humidity. The rich coastal waters and jungle teem with life. The pestiferous tree grub is about a foot long and is a tree-dwelling opportunistic predator. Nocturnal in habit, they will be found on most of the little islands and in the tropical jungles along the coastline. Whilst their diet consists largely of small amphibians, fairies and any other small creatures it finds, it has also been known to fell much larger beasts, if said beast is unfortunate enough to brush against them as they dangle from branches. The grub has six bright yellow-orange eyes which give it an almost comical appearance and could, of course, fool an inexperienced traveller. They have long prehensile tails and ten chubby legs with sticky feet which help them move about in the treetops with great ease. The secretions that exude from their fleshy bodies are greatly sought after by hunters. For situations where their weapons are not quite adequate to fell a mighty beast on its own, the added poison on their harpoons can subdue or kill some of the largest creatures from the deep.

Excerpt from the book: Some areas of Strangehollow are very close to human civilisation. There is a wood, far to the east, right on the outskirts of the great forest, known as Helelot Woods. There is a small tavern nearby which serves the infrequent travellers to the region, hopeful adventurers, most of whom never make the return journey. Helelot woods is an enchanted place, brimming with wildlife, common fairies lighting up the undergrowth at dusk like tiny lanterns, and a pale, slithering serpent waiting in the boughs of the ancient trees. For those who dare to enter Strangehollow from the east, Helelot Woods is a deceptively simple place to begin. The tavern owner, Ageon, a man of indiscernable age, displays the glittering skin of this beast at the entrance to the woods. He warns every guest, each questing fool about this loathesome beast, but none listen. Even the glittering sixty foot long epidermis of the creature displayed outside the tavern fails to deter them. Creativity is the little decisions at each paragraph/line for what you intentionally include or omit. Good ideas are free and abundant. They're not special. In truth it's invariably the opposite. Writer's block is when a dazzling array of options become tyrannical, team up with an unwillingness to fail, mug you in a dark alley and stick a bag over your head.
