To be fair, he’d got further into Mairi’s Wedding than anyone else in the village. Most folks only knew the chorus. And he did have a fine baritone, capable of giving Flower of Scotland some proper welly at the rugby. The few others in the pub—two regulars and a group who looked as if they must have escaped the far posher and more formal Royal George and in desperate need of excitement—watched with interest. Mhari turned a slow circle, catching each one in a glare.

A snippet from my latest book, A Veil of Starlight and Shadows: “Well,” Oberon began with the gravitas of a bard recounting a grand epic, “I commissioned the blacksmith to create me a suit of armour. I was determined to look my absolute best, to impress upon my dearly beloved the majesty of the faerie prince she was about to marry. You see, truth be told, I felt woefully inadequate. She was so much more dashing, dignified and delightful than myself!” “Sire, I’m sure she valued you for who you were,” Faelana offered. “Oh, she did, she did! The kindness and love she bestowed upon me. What a faerie! One of a kind!” Faelana kept her face carefully neutral, wincing inwardly. Kindness and love? The Faerie Queen she remembered had been as warm and fuzzy as an icicle. Had she still been alive, Faelana was certain her own betrothal to Elgar would have been vetoed faster than a troll at a tea party right from the start.
