Does anyone have a Korean speaking friend who might be able to help me out with this query on the squirrels and grapes motif in Korean art? I read in a museum definition that the Korean word for ‘squirrel’ sounds like ‘pine’, and the word for ‘grape’ sounds like ‘peach’ and both pine and peach are symbols of longevity so the squirrel and grapes motif stands for good health and a long life. Lovely, but I cannot verify this because this is the best translation of each word that I can find using the usual tools and they don't sound at all similar as far as I can tell. Pine: 소나무 (sonamu) Squirrel: 다람쥐 (daramjwi) Grape: 포도 (podo) Peach: 복숭아 (boksunga) Is the translation wrong or is the museum description wrong? Or are they both correct in a way that I can't understand?!
