A passage on Auguste Comte from David Masson’s Recent British Philosophy (1877). It reads: But this was ere long developed into the "Later Comtism"; in which, impelled by a sudden revelation that his system was deficient as yet on the sentimental side, the author suddenly broke down one of its gables, and did pass on, without his hat, into what irreverent lookers-on must really call delirium and moonlight. A footnote from Ludwig Buchner's Man in the Past, Present, and Future (1868). It reads: According to an English writer, J. W. I have seen where the members are listed online But I have not yet seen the hall of fame in which reside and work the members of your hall of fame It has then to be explained to him that the hall of fame is not another collateral institution, some ulterior counterpart to the lists websites and wrestlers which he has seen. The hall of fame is just the way in which all that he has already seen is organized. When they are seen and when their co-ordination is understood, the hall of fame has been seen. His mistake lay in his innocent assumption that it was correct to speak of lists, the websites, the wrestlers and the hall of fame. to speak, that is, as if the hall of fame stood for an extra member of the class of which these other units are members. He was mistakenly allocating the hall of fame the same category as that to which the other institutions belong.
As I write, hiring committees for open/open job ads are faced with the terrible decision of having to choose between 1) supporting and hiring someone working in a historically core area of philosophy that (for instance) Kant and Aristotle wrote about and 2) succumbing to the temptation to hire a candidate that works on some flashy applied area of philosophy, relating to a $870 billion a year industry, and that young undergrad students find exciting and relatable. Many departments appear to have opted for the second option (judging by the preponderance of philosophy of AI job ads this round, like the one above). Unfortunately, the size of the AI industry is only half of that worldwide. The $870 billion a year number is actually the size of the arts and culture sector in the U.S. alone. So, for my money, I would just choose to satisfy 1 and 2 at the same time by hiring an aesthetician.

The Google books ngram search results for ‘Savan’ and ‘savans’ . It shows a relatively low flat line from the 1500’s on until about 1797 when a sharp spike begins, peaking in the 1850’s and returning to a flat low line like before right after 1900.

An excerpt from Part II of S. Billing's "What is Religion? Hylo-Idealism?" (published in the July 1884 edition of the Journal of Science). It reads: "So far as Automatism is concerned, with which she seems to agree, it is merely necessary to cite H.G. Lewes’s summation:—'We can conceive an automaton dog that would bark at the presence of a beggar, but not an automaton dog that would bark one day at a beggar and the next day wag his tail, remembering the food the beggar had bestowed.' Further, Lewes denies that Descartes favoured animal automacy. He says that Descartes was merely contrasting mechanical movements with animal motion (“Physical Bases of Mind”)."

the mythology of analytic philosophy has it introducing rigor ‱ and clarity to philosophy and making it more scientific but there already was a number of rigorous and clear methodologies. Read the Victorian idealists and naturalists or the pragmatists and see how vigorous and clear they were. They even formalize their arguments. What analytic philosophy introduced was a rigorized methodology rooted in common sense to compete with those and thereby resist their more radical conclusions. Analytic philosophy is not some sui generis framework but the ideological victory of the British moderate middle class after 90 years of debate over the implications of Hegel and Darwin.

If arrangement in the arts is due to intelligence, by a parity of reasoning we are compelled to admit that natural phenomena is the product of intellect, and of an intellect so powerful in its grasp that it compels homogeneity and unity,-for we must remember the scien- tific axiom that "the unknown is to be interpreted by the known." from matter, which at its best is but a plastic substance dominated by intellect which wills and executes ? Matter does neither ; inert until vivified by intelligence. When the Materialist bases his creed upon matter he ignores himself, forgetting that force is an impulsion not born of itself, but becomes active by an antecedent impulse. An effect em- bodied in its antecedent effect becomes a cause ; so an effect becomes the cause of a succeeding effect, rolling in a grand sequence resulting in orderly arrangement: this is pro- gression in its real meaning,-the evolution of effects bound up in their antecedent causes; the universe of effects re- sulting from the primal cause, mayhap Aristotle's unmoving centre."
