Level 1: Reaction We enter the model with a very basic assessment: How did the trainees respond to the training? We can assess the trainees’ response through questionnaires, interviews, or even informal conversation. In the context of Chaos Engineering, the owners and operators of the system are the people we want to educate about systemic vulnerabili‐ ties. They are the trainees as well as stakeholders in the safety of the system. We want these stakeholders to tell us whether the experiments were helpful or not. Did they feel like they learned something from the experiments? Did they enjoy Game Day exercises? How do they feel about the Chaos Engineering program as implemented? Would they recommend continuing or expanding the program? If the answers are positive, we consider that a positive Level 1 evaluation in the Kirkpatrick Model and this is a minimal demonstration of the ROI of Chaos Engineering. If the answers are not positive, then the Kirkpatrick Model tells us that the program is likely ineffective and the Chaos Engineering program as implemented should be discontinued or significantly changed. Education rarely occurs when the stakeholders do not value the training program.
