As historians of philosophy, we are directly acquainted with the method of 'close reading', but are rarely challenged to articulate what, exactly, this methodology entails, and how it can be better practiced. This one-day event brings together senior scholars with early career researchers within the history of philosophy to discuss the role of close reading in our own work and its implications for our discipline. ECRs and graduate students working on the following topics are encouraged to submit abstracts or register to participate: philosophies of nature, environmental aesthetics and ethics philosophy of art, beauty and aesthetics underrepresented and non-canonical figures in the history of philosophy

Text only: Philosophy’s Future, Past and Present Call for Panel Proposals Proposal due date: 15 April 2026 Notification by end of May 2026 Extending New Narratives in the History of Philosophy (ENN) has been working to reconceive history of philosophy with the idea that doing so can help to change the standards of practice in philosophy, making it more inclusive and diverse. We have not been alone in this work. Our concluding conference, being planned for 7-9 October 2027 in Montréal, Québec, Canada, aims to bring together an array of groups to share with one another the fruits of various efforts to transform the history of philosophy and to provide the occasion to imagine together philosophy’s future, asking: How might we tell the stories of philosophy’s past in the future? How can these stories affect how we do philosophy now and in the future? Amid ongoing shifts in the discipline, in the academic environment, and in our broader cultural and political landscapes, are these questions still the right ones? Efforts to retrieve the work of neglected and marginalized philosophers and philosophies of the past, and to sustain their presence in the discipline have been redoubled in recent years. This conference aims to bring together scholars of Africana and Black philosophy, women philosophers in European traditions, Indigenous philosophy, Latin-American philosophy, as well as non-canonical figures in different traditions, to discuss a rich set of philosophical questions and methodological issues highlighted by this work. The conference will be bilingual (English and French) and the format will include a combination of plenary sessions, with thematic panels and keynote speakers, and parallel sessions with papers selected through a general call for abstracts. We will also build in time for informal conversations and for mentoring of early career researchers. At this time, we welcome proposals for panels. Slavery and Abolition in Eighteenth-Century Philosophy May 13-15, 2026 Emory University Atlanta, Georgia Call for Papers Recent studies of eighteenth-century philosophy have generated incisive questions about the limitations of the moral and political insight of British and European philosophers who were invested in (or silent about) transatlantic slavery. During this period, the rapidly expanding traffic and enslavement of African people appears as a topic of common knowledge and discussion in religion, law, economics, literature, and drama. Writings by enslaved and self-emancipated women and men attested to the violence and degradation of the conditions of slavery, as well as to the hypocrisy of much of Western moral and political discourse. This symposium invites proposals (500 words) for 25- minute presentations that consider writing about slavery and abolition both as and in conversation with eighteenth-century philosophy. First page of Call for Papers document that says: How Women Shaped the Nordic Enlightenment Intellectual Equality, Women’s Education, and Moral Philosophy (Call for Papers) International Conference at the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, June 18-20, 2025 Due to increased scholarly attention to women’s writings and agency, the image of the European Enlightenment as a male-dominated enterprise has slowly begun to fade. It is now established that women writers across Europe participated in intellectual, religious, and political debates, taking up the pen to combat prejudices, voice their concerns on private and public matters, and advocate their own cause. While women’s participation in the Enlightenment is well researched in some parts of Europe, notably in France and England, other regions have been neglected in this wave of research. This holds true for Europe’s North, raising the question of how the Enlightenment unfolded in the Nordic countries seen from the vantage point of women. Papers presented at the conference may but need not refer explicitly or systematically to the above outline, but they should address some of the following research questions:
