The band played the last riff together eight times and then held out the final note until Charles signaled that the song was over. He gave the thumbs up to the engineer, who promptly stopped the tape. Thomas slumped over his drum set and mumbled "Jesus Christ, can we move on now?" Christopher balanced his bass guitar on his lap and shook out his hands, trying to keep his wrists from cramping up. "Yeah man, let's play another song, I think we got it." Kenneth's voice came through everyone's headphones as he talked into a microphone behind the sound booth. "That was great," he said, trying to stay positive and professional. "Are we ready to move on, boys?" Charles looked around their glass case of a recording booth and saw his fellow bandmates beginning to nod. He raised his hand and shook his head, walking over to the microphone in front of Robbie. "I think we should just do that one more time," he said.

Spraying the paper towel with cleaner once more, Sydney shoved her hand to the very back of the wooden storage space under the table. Without even looking, she knew she had hit the dustiest point yet. Her nose burned as she pulled the paper towel back towards her, bringing decades of dirt and grime with it. She sneezed twice, then stood up and sneezed again. A tall, lanky dude was leaning against the counter. He wore a black Gary Numan t-shirt and made no effort to brush his dirty blonde hair out of his face. It was her newest coworker, Hunter. "Goddamn," he said. "Are you allergic to bullshit now?" "No, just allergic to you," Syd said.

Larry invited her and Hunter to follow him downstairs and even though it seemed very weird, they did. It wasn't long before they were in a part of the basement neither of them knew existed. They walked past stacks of old Harry Belafonte albums, a moldy shelf full of outdated techno CDs from the nineties, several life-sized cardboard cut-outs of KISS, what appeared to be a small shrine set up in honor of Alice Cooper, and a white ten-gallon bucket positioned under a leaky pipe before they reached their destination.

It was no surprise to anyone that Charles' idea to whisper the word "whisper" quickly spiraled into something silly and unproductive. Thomas had been standing too close to the microphone and his "p" sounds popped when he said the word. Robbie was unable to get through a take without laughing. Charles wanted the word articulated in a certain way that no one managed to get right. Finally Christopher got so mad that he asked to take five and stormed outside without a jacket.
"So, Russell," Frog Man said, lowering his guitar and fixing his gaze on the young man. "The lake. Will you drink from it and join us here in the Darkwoods for all eternity?" "Um..." Russell stammered. Any intelligible words seemed to be stuck in his throat. He did not know what lake Frog Man was talking about but he had only just stumbled upon this land. Eternity seemed like a big commitment.
"We're trying our best, man," Thomas said. "I know, I know," Charles replied. "But it's not at one hundred precent yet." He turned to Robbie and added, "Don't for-get, the line in the pre-chorus section is 'Eyes of blue and skin of green, by his lonesome near the stream."" Robbie tried hard not to roll his eyes. "That's what I said, isn't it? 'Eyes of blue and skin of green'?" "By his lonesome near the stream.' Last time you said 'by the stream.' It's 'near."" "Yeah, 'By his lonesome by the stream.'" "No, it's 'near the stream,' Robbie. 'By his lonesome near the stream-'" "No one's going to notice, man," Christopher interrupted. "It sounds just fine to me. Let's get on with it." "People will notice," Charles said, his temper rising. "It will sound weird if you say the word 'by' twice in the same sentence like that, and that isn't how I wrote it."
It also baffled him that after spending so much time, money, and resources on the record, the studio wanted to pull the plug completely. None of the guys were answering their phones or opening their doors. What was once a project full of potential was now something everyone was afraid to touch for liability reasons. Plus, the record was weird as shit. The best way to market a concept album about frog people by an unknown band would be with extensive touring and live television appearances. That was impossible to do without a live band. So Polymerch Records would take the loss. And Kenneth hadn't gotten demoted yet, but he anticipated an unwelcome transfer to the AM radio side of the label.

Frog Man drained his drink in one long sip and sauntered up to the stage. He grabbed the house guitar and stood in front of the microphone, looking out at the handful of bored bar patrons (most of which were waiting for their turn onstage). He strummed the guitar once, decided it was in tune enough, and shouted "I'm Frog Man, welcome to my endless swamp, motherfuckers!"

He pulled her in for a quick kiss then motioned at her camera. "Why don't you go take some pictures? You keep talking about wanting to be a magazine photographer but you have no portfolio." The irritation came back all at once. Cynthia had no decent portfolio because she spent all of her time in dive bars and unknown clubs supporting her boyfriend's band. Film was expensive and she had wasted so much money taking artistic pictures of the guys onstage. She had wanted to help them get some shots for promotion but in the end the studio hired a male photographer to do the same thing. Robbie was a sweet guy but he never understood why she had been so upset by that scenario and it remained a point of tension between them. "Sure, I'll go take some pictures," Cynthia said, swallowing her frustration. "Groovy," Robbie said. "Now aren't you going to wish me luck?"
"Great! By the way, feel free to change the music," he said. "I put on the re-issue of The Golden Record they sent into space." Sydney gave him a blank look, unsure what he was talking about. "You know, the record they put on the Voyager in 1977, so that if aliens found it they could hear greetings in 55 languages and learn about the humans of Earth?" Scott explained. Sydney didn't know what he was talking about but wasn't in the mood for a full history lesson. So she nodded and said, "Oh yeah, cool." "Anyway, I'll be back in a jiffy." Scott said. He walked up the stairs and out the front door of the shop.
