It was a delight to catch a glimpse of Khalil in the throes of laughter. He laughed as though each laugh were a physical vessel urgently exiting his body, or a secret he'd held for so long that it had forced its way out. Khalil's body jerked forward when he laughed-his laughter was more of a kinetic event than a sonic one. He rocked, he shook slightly, and he smiled wide. One seat over, Mamdani laughed, too, with a bit more volume; his laughter seemed to arrive less like a long-held secret than like an idea that he couldn't wait to share. Most of the audience didn't know that the two men were in the room, and because of this most of the audience missed out on the small miracle of watching them share their joy at the scene before them.

Four kids and only one of them playing girls sports. That’s what all of this is about. Four kids who aren’t dominating or winning trophies or taking scholarships. Four kids who are just trying to find some friends and feel like they are a part of something. Four kids trying to get through each day. Rarely has so much fear and anger been directed at so few. I don’t understand what they are going through or why they feel the way they do. But I want them to live. And all the research shows that even a little acceptance and connection can reduce suicidality significantly. For that reason, as much as any other, I have taken this action in the hope that we can continue to work together and find a better way.

texas border cookbook classic nachos These are nachos just like Mom used to make-if Mom ran a west Texas cantina. Actually the tomatoe and green onions are atypical embellishments, but colorful and tasty ones. Substitute homemade refrie black beans for added flair and serve the nachos as is, or offer Mantequilla de los Pobres (page 11), smooth, cool sour cream to dip them in. 36 Tostaditas (page 32) or unspiced, lightly salted, commercially prepared corn tortilla chips ¾ cup Frijoles Refritos (page 179) 4 to 6 large pickled jalapeño chiles, stemmed and sliced into thin 2 green onions, trimmed and sliced (about ⅓ cup) ¾ cup (about 3 ounces) grated Mon- terey Jack cheese ¾ cup (about 3 ounces) grated medium-sharp cheddar cheese rounds 4 plum tomatoes (about ¾ pound), juiced, seeded, and diced 0000 Position a rack in the upper third of the oven and preheat the oven to 475°F. Spread each tostadita with about 1 teaspoon of the frijoles refritos and arrange them in a sin layer in a large shallow, heat-proof serving dish. Scatter the jalapeños, tomatoes, and green onions c the beans. Sprinkle with the cheeses and bake about S minutes, or until the cheeses are melted and nachos are sizzling and lightly browned. Serve immediately.

Caviar & Parmesan Potato Chips Ingredients: * 1 bag kettle unsalted * 1/2-1 tsp MSG * Pinch of seasoned salt or plain salt * Lots of black pepper * Parmigiano or Pecorino to taste but be liberal * 1 tbsp dried chives * Fresh chives to taste * Crème fraîche * Caviar to taste (I'm using Sevruga) Directions: 1. Spread the chips on an even layer on a baking sheet. Add the parm, a lot of it and black pepper. Again, lots of it. 2. Bake at 300F for 10-12 min. 3. Mix the salt, dried chives and msg.
