Patients must come first in health service redevelopment It was not that long ago I sat in a health infrastructure meeting at AWH and was told the redevelopment would not affect patient care. That may well have been sincerely believed, but it also reflected a troubling detachment from what was happening on the ground – and, frankly, what was always going to happen. Early on, the priorities in this redevelopment have become clear. Construction timelines, tradie access, and project delivery are being placed ahead of patient care and wellbeing. It is difficult to accept attempts to minimise this as simply asking people to park further away or walk a little longer. The more important question is how those trade-offs came to be treated as reasonable in the first place, and who was expected to bear the cost of them. Construction and trade convenience should not come first in a public health service. If builders need to park a little further away or walk a bit more, so be it. They are not the ones seeking treatment, attending appointments, supporting unwell family members, or trying to access care during some of the hardest moments of their lives. Patients and families should never be the ones expected to absorb the inconvenience so a redevelopment can run more smoothly. Richard Hendrie, Lavington
Albury homelessness crisis requires a charitable response So we are all concerned about homelessness! There are those poor people sleeping rough in Noreuil Park and the numbers also tell us that there is a huge waiting list for public housing. In Albury, there are 643 people on the general waiting list for social housing and 111 on the priority list. But, wait a minute, don't build units in my backyard! It is a recipe for a slum! We pretend we care, but when it comes to the crunch, we are found wanting. Where is our compassion and sense of community? If you think it is going to be a monstrous development, just stop and have a think. The units built in East Albury are a great example of social housing incorporating lots of features to help people in need and to find them a safe place to live. How important is this for the children of those on the waiting list? But to read at the end of the article that a Catholic priest, Father Martin Cruickshank, raises concern about theft of church property is disheartening to say the least. There are many verses in the Bible that have something to say about a situation such as this, but let me quote this one from Deuteronomy 15:7-8: "If there is among you anyone in need, a member of your community in any of your towns within the land that the Lord your God is giving you, do not be hard-hearted or tight-fisted toward your needy neighbour. Residential housing is for shelter, not speculation There is a four-bedroom weatherboard home in Albury that perfectly encapsulates the unadulterated madness of our housing market. It recently underwent an understated cosmetic makeover, and the owners then listed it for permanent rental at $750 a week. When no one bit, instead of lowering the price, they pivoted to a short-stay platform, slapping on a completely unhinged $2500-a-week price tag. Drive a short 800 metres down to the riverbank and the contrast is sickening. There, nestled in the trees, you will find locals - working full-time jobs, with kids doing homework by torchlight - living in tents. Every time a home becomes a de facto hotel, a piece of our community dies. Yet politicians and newspapers blame immigrants or inflation. What a cop-out. The rot started when the Howard government overhauled the CGT, introducing a 50 per cent discount that paired destructively with negative gearing. For nearly 30 years, this tax setup has penalised first-home buyers while rewarding those buying their fifth. State-based vacant land taxes and short-stay levies are a start, but the federal government must use tax reform to completely blast the backside out of multi-property incentives. Predictably, the property sector warns this will destabilise the economy. It brings to mind the words of Raphael Warnock: "When you're accustomed to privilege, equity feels like oppression." This government has shown real backbone by stripping away the safety nets protecting property hoarders. Residential housing is for shelter, not speculation. Actually is might be one royal , with black spoon bill and one with golden bill? One ibis is beak deep in water, the other is scratching its back. All of them are reflected in the still golden water.
Photos don’t capture the majesty of these huge old trees surrounding a billabong in north eastern Victoria.
It is a poor qualified and very photo but the black shapes on a grey dead tree are a mix of small black cormorants and black and white pied cormorants. There were a nearly 20 on one tree, not all captured in this shot.
