When Christ’s body is broken on the cross, the illusion that holiness exists apart from flesh is shattered. God does not bypass the body to save us. God enters the body to reveal that no part of our humanity is disposable. The cross exposes every lie that says suffering bodies are less worthy of dignity, less worthy of belonging, less worthy of love. For queer and trans people, our bodies often become sites of projection, debate, legislation, and control. Yet to follow Christ is not to erase the embodied self but to risk being fully known within it. Trans embodiment, like all embodiment, becomes a testimony that creation is still unfolding, still breathing, still revealing new dimensions of divine image. The God who took on flesh does not recoil from bodies that change, bodies that transition, bodies that refuse to disappear simply because they trouble someone else’s certainty. One of the men crucified beside Jesus offered this prayer: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” He did not pretend to be perfect. He did not ask to escape the body or transcend the moment. He simply asked to be remembered—to remain within love even as everything falls apart. And Christ responded: “Today you will be with me in paradise.” Paradise, then, is not merely a distant heaven but the restoration of relationship, the promise that no suffering body is abandoned, no life is beyond the reach of mercy. Liberation begins in the places where many people are the most tempted to look away. Queer bodies, trans bodies, disabled bodies, racialized bodies—every body that has been marked as “other”—becomes a site where resurrection hope is already growing. When we come into the kingdom that Christ reveals, we do not leave our bodies behind. We discover that they were never obstacles to grace but rather the very vessels of it.
