Our visit to the Anne Frank exhibit at the Center for Jewish History. Absolutely moved to tears. As we get older, a conversation my wife and I have with greater frequency is how close to our own lifetimes, certain events - be it relating to our own history or events in world history - have happened. We think about the times our parents lived in. Yes, time is relative, but as you get older, these events feel closer to your lifetime. Personally, the event that has the greatest impact on me is the signing of Executive Order 9066, which allowed the US government to remove my parents and their family (and their relatives and friends of Japanese descent) from their homes, and incarcerating them in internment camps for up to 4 years. Happening before, during and after this time (1933-1945), millions of Jews were removed from their homes, persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime and its allies throughout Europe. To us, these acts of atrocity were happening 20-25 years before we were born. Think about that… just after the turn of this current century (2000-2005). The sad part is, events such as these still occur throughout the world - and literally in our own backyards - today, in various stages similar to what happened back then. Stand up, speak out.
