Had the same problem - got much better results with a lapel mic. Easier to use too, no mic technique needed.
I'm guessing you have a wall behind you that is parallel to the one in front of you? I suspect you need more to absorb or deflect the sound bouncing between those walls. I'd test by hanging a blanket in front of you first
