A character enters the public domain, a bunch of low budget movies come out with that character as a blood-thirsty monster, people online throw a fuss, the movie gets attention and Tubi ad revenue, encouraging more of these movies. It's so frustrating to be talking about the public domain these days. You go "oh neat, Betty Boop is entering the public domain in 2026," and get the most eye rolling replies. "Oh, great, here come all the Betty Boop horror movies!" My brother in Christ, if you don't want those kind of movies, stop giving them the attention they're looking for!
