The first woman was all sniffles and snot; the second, heaving sobs; and the third, one long haunting wail that put Thalia’s heart in a vice grip. Stick to the script, her boss always said about these tough conversations. Never let yourself get trapped on a call. But how could Thalia possibly recite her next line when a debtor was lamenting what had become of their life? A tragedy of three part-time jobs patchworked together and a dementia-ridden mother waiting for care at home. “I caught Mom drinking dish soap last night. Puke on her shirt and bubbles in her mouth. How am I supposed to keep her safe when my third shift of the day starts in fifteen minutes? And how the fuck am I supposed to deal with you people on top of that?”
