She opens her hand toward me. I hesitate. I can't remember the last time I reached out to someone in any real way. There are handshakes, sure. The minute contact requires in everyday life. But beyond that? I'm used to touching people with my fists.

“If it don't work, what's the harm?”

“I'm afraid I'll look silly.” I mean it to be a lie, but when the words come out, they sting too much to be false.

“Just you and me here, Wildcat. 'Sides, you reckon I'm a picture of grace myself?”

At that, I become the shy child my father adopted. “Promise you won't laugh?”

“Only if I'm laughing with you, hon.”

I reach out and take her hand. My breath hitches as our fingers touch. Her skin is soft, her grip gentle enough to hold an eggshell. I take a deep breath as she guides me onto the floor. She glances back at me, almost as if she doubts I'll be there. Our eyes meet, and that crooked smile of hers looks a lot less devious now. Genuine. Caring.

Charming, even.
