Read more than a few people saying they were being shady about lumping MTX in with the game sales But an actually-useful question would be physical v. digital on games that even have a physical version to begin with

i've never seen a company, especially one that has struggled in so many other facets of their business, willfully poisoning their own, private well.
My PS5 has a disk drive Ive not bought a physical disk in a long time The lack of having to worry about damage to the disk, or bringing it along when I take my PS5 to play on vacation or a friend's house, is rather enjoyable

The disc drive was there, we chose not to. And even with the disc drives we STILL chose to down load that shit. Just like we do with apps on our phones, just like we do for our music, just like we do for our movies, just like we do on Steam. We gave permission years ago.
Except they sold PS5s with disc drives too. People made their choices as to which one to buy, so yes, that choice was part of the data indicating less demand for discs. Anyhoo...
Is gonna be kinda funny when physical stores will offer the hardware, but no games to buy along with them, while other platforms will still be represented on the selves.
It pisses me off that ign and whatnot keep saying that those physical sales numbers show that "no one buys discs anymore" while they clearly show that more than 20% of all sales are physical copies, which is a HUGE number, especially considering that most of the games are digital only.
The PS5 shipped with a drive and without (cheaper). You can buy a PS5 drive. PS6 will not have a drive. It’s basic economics.
Here's the thing- if we got like- info pamphlets in the box? Game guides like the days of old? That'd be a decent (albeit overall crap) exchange for the box not having a disc. Is Sony suggesting that? NO! They're not even trying to sweeten the deal. Just, "You will get no discs and like it."
This entire screaming at the cloud crap coming from people over PS is just...so boring. Guys, shit changes. Yall are just screaming that cassettes are better than CDs. Times change, media changes. Not only do most people not bother with disc, but most games don't even have the full game on the disc.

Bought 0 physical games and I have had a ps5 since launch.
And consumers rejected that too! About 2/3 of all PS5s sold have a disc drive Mine does - admittedly, I dont buy many physical games, but i buy some, and its a great BluRay player to boot!
with this and the nintendo game key carts, we are entering the game equivalent to music streaming. Nothing owned, nothing cared for, just consume and move on to the next thing.
And everytime I see someone saying the numbers are BS I just see denial. 🤷♂️ Of course physical should stick around (as it should have on PC BTW), but now it's a fact a large majority of gamers go with digital now and I'm not sure pretending otherwise is helping anyone.
It wouldn't be as big of an issue if they kept doing PC ports. Nothing ever gets deleted off the internet
The LAST console I will own from Sony if this is their plan. I will just switch to PC for games. Paying $90 for a disk is already argument enough.

Tbf game disc sales did plummet during PS4. The vast majority of ppl buy the digital versions.

Feature not a bug. The goal is to make everything require a subscription so you don’t own anything you buy anymore. If buying isn’t owning, and possession is 9/10ths of the law, doesn’t this also make pirating legal? I’m so over the corporate BS. I’ll sacrifice graphics to get story back.
The same happened to music CDs. Especially in cars to promote streaming services which blatantly steal profits from artists & then claim that no one is buying CDs anymore…. 🤬
They get a bigger cut of digital sales, since they own the storefront (getting a 30% cut of all digital sales). There’s also manufacturing costs for the discs and cases, but if they were interested in preserving physical they’d just do what Nintendo does now and have physical cost $10 more.
What's horrible is people saving on the digital PS5 actually lost all the money invested in their library and were able to afford FEWER games.

A big reason I got a PS5 was backwards compatibility, I've enjoyed newer games on it sure but still being able to play all my PS4 (all running better) made it a simple upgrade to my ps4 The PS6 won't have a disk drive, dozens of games I have won't be playable...

They keep reducing the offering of games available on disc (or doing nothing to try and make a disc run more accessible for indies, etc.), reducing the availability of consoles that will play discs, and reducing the selection on shelves in stores, then just cite raw physical sales data
I can't remember how long it was that a game came on physical media and played instantly on the PS - it's pointless when games get updated, if you are worried about playing PS4 games on a PS6 keep the PS4
Actually ps5 has a disk version and a not disk version. The point was to see which one did better. No disks worked better and so ps6 won't have disks. The consumers are literally the ones that decided this. You had the choice.
unfortunately, this is going to end up like apple removing the headphone jack. Everyone will complain about it now but 2 years down the road they won't care. PC makers have removed optical drives decades ago. See how easy it is to find a PC under 15 years old that came with one.

The lack of pre-owned discs circulating for PS5 is one of the reasons I was hesitant to buy one (although I did). I also resent paying full price for a game years after it's been released but BG3 is damn good, although it may be the last time I download. Sony are killing the market and themselves.

I know my anecdote doesn't prove anything, but I bought *one* physical PS4 game, and that's because it came with the Aim controller. I didn't even know the disc drive in my PS4 was broken until I tried to use it. I have a feeling that the disc-less PS5 was made in response to people like me.
I still like a physical disc. Bought my ps5 specifically so it would have this function. Older dvds and blue rays you can still operate. (How many movie dvds have commentaries you can’t access on a digital copy)

I bought a ps5 pro assuming it came with all the bells and whistles and was very unpleasantly surprised to find that I needed to buy a disc drive.
I have a laptop with a built in DVD drive, I can download games whenever I want.

You honestly think Sony removed the disc drive and THEN physical sales started falling? You don't think physical sales plummeted the second digital distribution became a thing and Sony saw the data and then decided to remove the drive because it's a literal waste? What world are you living in?

The original PS5s had both disk & digital only at launch. The slim PS5 & Pro had the disk drive as an add-on. However buying habits have shifted since COVID to mostly digital due to convenience of downloading. The shift has been happening since 2010. Most younger gamers grew up with this convenience
I'm honestly devastated. 1 angry sun flash is all it takes 2 erase digital libraries globally. They don't even consider the possibility. It doesn't just affect gamers. It affects creators & developers & publishers also. FF rev will be my last purchase. I have to see it through after 35 years. So.

Pretty standard playbook technique. Make it harder to buy a thing, or incentivize buying an alternative, then use those sales figures as justification to stop offering it. Just like how "nobody" wants phones with headphone jacks, because nobody buys them (because those models suck).
Today someone told me that every time Sony prints game discs they lose $750,000 per game release, and that me supporting it will make them go bankrupt. Can't make this stuff up. I just gotta laugh at it. Sure. Go bankrupt. I don't care anymore. I'll be a Nintendrone instead.

Sony isn't hurt by the removal of physical games. They've been striving for it for years. Digital games dont need disc factories, store shelves, trucks, ect. Just a few more servers, and no more second hand sales. They only mention the weak sales to convince YOU that physical games don't sell.
was just saying this the other day when that report said only 7 PlayStation games sold over 100k physical discs is that their also not producing that much to begin with. Games are constantly being sold out on launch because retailers aren’t getting enough unless you pre order.
Physical game sells were already declining for a decade. Steam made downloads the industry standart. This is just a continuation of PC gamer loosing physical media. The outcry is loud, but the consumer will buy the games regardles. They always do. There is no more cucked consumer base than gamer.

This reminds me of when Sony said that they weren't going to be backwards compatible with previous consoles (I think the PS4?) and then found that early adopters generally didn't mind the lack of backwards compatibility. And the customers who DIDN'T buy it felt... how?

I was waiting for the normal time I jump in and buy a console (price cut, good exclusives, new features) but none of those things materialised and it started going the other direction lol

Truth is, if we actually could have faith in these companies to not be absolute scummy capitalist pigs, this wouldn't even be an issue. Nobody trusts these corporations with the safety of our purchases. Physical media is a necessary waste because of this. This is the media industry's own mess.
Look at PC. Lack of physical media hasn’t stopped Steam, Epic games or GoG.
Same with cars, manufacturers make tons of black white and silver versions and barely any color versions and go no one buys other colors. Well since only 20% of your cars are all the other colors and 80% are black white and silver I wonder why.

That's the plan. Charge people for disk drives they have to install themselves, and then you blame them when things go wrong and demand they buy a new console) Or they rent games, never owning anything, and you can always take the rented game away on a whim.
Sometimes when people talk about the numbers I really wonder if they're including steams own digital sales in those numbers which would be massively unfair obviously since like.... they're a market specific for PCs and shouldn't be included???
Why doesn't Sony offer a Sony-branded plug&play external dvd player that plugs right into a USB port and is fully integrated with the PS5 on boot. Another HW sale for Sony.
