I tried to change the subject. “So… How long did you know we were here?” “Most of the day,” Tetora replied with a snort. “You’d think for a royal, he could afford better cologne!” I glanced back, noting Olethros looked faintly offended. “Citrus!” Tetora went on. “And sage. It’s too cloying. I can’t smell anything else.” That was probably the whole point of it, since demons didn’t have an innate smell. “I don’t mind it so much…” I admitted. Tetora stopped walking. “What was that?” “I said I like it.” “What do you even see in him?” Tetora scoffed, storming forward again. “He makes me laugh,” I answered carefully. “On the surface, he’s aloof and arrogant and even a bit tricksy… but underneath, he’s just as ridiculous as everyone else. He pretends he doesn’t really care for most things, but he does.” Tetora froze. With a full-body shudder, he replied, “Forget I ever asked.”

“Good,” Ambrose said, not bothering to turn around. “We’re all here.” I glanced at Nora before starting. “We believe it would be in our best interests to bolster our strength before rescuing Aziza—” Ambrose raised a hand. “There is no need.” “No need for…?” “For persuasion,” he said evenly. “I am satisfied that Nora has found direction again. External pressure is no longer required. Proceed with your plans.” What specifically had changed his mind? “Um...” “We are convinced that you are being guided by a higher hand,” Ambrose continued. “Chester has spoken of your exploits on Earth, and we have affirmed that demonic intervention has returned you for your final acts of self-redemption.” I stared openly. “What?” Finally, Ambrose turned with a rare grin. “As Nora would say, just go with it for now.”
“Say it isn’t so, Chester!” He flicked his tail, clearly offended by the lack of proper support. I shook him once. “You’re just a cat, right?” “Mrow.” Olethros’s eyes widened as an errant drop of sweat trickled from his brow. “I suppose one could make that argument…” “What argument?” “Allow me to translate,” he said before clearing his throat. “If a sentient being not only realizes but permanently achieves its perfect form—both spiritually and physically—can it not be called a cat? However, I respectfully object to your usage of the word ‘just.’ It has long been my conclusion that cats were blessed with perfection from the moment of their creation. I came to accept this as fact during my early experiments under Aziza’s command, and I would ask that, as my assistant, you not only recognize my discovery but support it in all of our future endeavors together.” I brought Chester up to eye level. “Perfect form… Assistant? You said all that with a single mrow?!”

He turned his head at the last second, so I ended up patting the top of his head instead. He slowly looked up at me, eyes gleaming with satisfaction. Galenus, Ambrose, and even Amos had frozen, their silent, incredulous looks speaking volumes. Well, whatever he wanted, I guess I played along. His brows knit, and he straightened with a faint sigh. “It is a start.” I had the distinct feeling I’d missed something important.

Wait… His weapon of choice is… cards?! “Surrender, Captain!” he barked, slapping a card down on a tiny table between us. “I know you cannot beat the Empress of Moons!” “I—What?” His hollow eyes widened, then clouded. “That was a most impressive move, Raedine…” He set the rest of his cards down with trembling fingers. “To go such lengths never to lose… Too bad you’ll never be able to duplicate it.” I dropped the Three of Stars that was in my right hand. “Ambrose?!”

A smaller section of the chamber, off to one side, appeared to be an office or perhaps a dorm room. Stacks of manga and half-filled sketchbooks lay toppled across a cluttered desk, surrounded by chewed pens, empty ramen cups, and half-eaten snack packs. A calendar from a New York Chinese restaurant hung crookedly on a nearby pegboard, its gold-leaf date long since faded. It featured a stylized dog, its gaze forward-facing. I wonder why it’s bearing its teeth? Maybe it was meant to be a Foo Dog, a symbol of protection? I shivered and turned away, only to have my attention drawn to a floor-to-wall display of collectible figurines. So many of them have pink hair…! After suppressing the urge to take a few of the rarer ones, I tried calling to Aina. “What I’m not seeing is any sort of interactive device, let alone whatever NAUGHT truly is—” Runes quivered and scattered as circuits flared, and large panels shot towards the edges of the chamber. The center area was now visible, revealing a giant blue orb of shifting light, its core pulsing like a slow, struggling heartbeat. It rested on a pillar made of cables and computer towers, wrapped in electric-blue coolant tubes.

He flared his enormous, bat-like wings once before settling them in a neutral position on his back. Raela pursed her lips. “You are acting as a peacock, aren’t you? With the purple hair… You are most assuredly vying for someone’s attention.” “Whose attention would I vie for?” he asked with mock innocence. “Euphridia’s,” she said confidently as the demon's face fell. “Oh, but one other thing.” “What?” Raela folded her arms. “When you meet her, be sure to wear clothes. It is not respectful to be naked in front of her.” He added a dark gray toga that hung to his mid-knees. “So many useless customs.”

So maybe you’re cured?” Nora scowled. “That’s different. And I’m not about to test your theory without any evidence!” But that’s the whole point of testing… “My Lady, I will be there with you for every roll of the ship,” Relias declared. “No such malady will befall you, even if I have to hold your hand the entire way there.” We all straightened at that, and Vulture looked hard at me, of all people. What? I didn’t say the lousy line, he did! Nora let out a long groan for any number of reasons. “I’ll make you all pay for this. Mark my words!”

The marketplace seemed to grow fancier the farther we moved in. At a polished oak doorway that looked far too respectable for any thief’s hideout, Relias once again produced Nora’s dagger with a discreet flick of his wrist. A pair of uniformed men exchanged a glance, then stepped aside, gesturing us through without a word. We ushered upstairs as if this were the most natural arrangement imaginable. Where was the back alley? The smoky den of ne’er-do-wells? The whispered password and the shadowy informant with a dagger under the table? Instead, Vulture’s suite opened onto a balcony above the market, with airy shutters wide to let in the din below. Inside, though, it was another world entirely. Thick crimson rugs muffled our steps. A carved desk gleamed with orderly stacks of ledgers. And at the center of it all sat the dark-haired man himself—lean, sharp-eyed, and utterly at ease with us. Not even a quirked eyebrow! And what’s with the open shutters? Isn’t he afraid of assassins? Er—assassins that assassinate assassins, maybe? Honestly, the whole thing felt downright asinine. …Sorry.
Oliver shrugged. “I only mention it because such strong, negative feelings can pull at the animus around us. As Captain, it's your duty to rectify this before it becomes a situation.” “Well, what should I do?” “Coddle him.” “Huh?” “Tell him he is doing a good job. Pat him on the head. Scratch under his chin.” “He’s not a dog!” Oliver smirked. “Oh, but he is a dog.” “Enough! You’re being rather crass about a problem that—” “Created in the 11th Year of Our Goddess, and the first Year of the Dog. Relias is a dog,” Oliver affirmed. “Raela, in comparison, was created six years before him, in the first Year of the Dragon.” “There’s no way you meant that the first time you said it.” “How wonderful it is that words can have more than one meaning,” he said with a nasty grin.
“Physics doesn’t like it, but I think the sun and the moon both revolve around the world,” she murmured as she labeled her Speranza-centric model. Oliver moved closer, bending down to peer at her scratchings. “Anyway… The stars. They must be fixed points in an outer layer of some sort,” she muttered angrily, speckling the perimeter of her model with swift stabs of her staff. I scratched my head, not sure why Nora was so discontented with her rationale so far. “Seems simple enough, I guess…” “You’re here,” Nora said, plonking her staff on Speranza. “Do you know how dense you’d be if it were true?” “Look, I know I’m not the brightest, but you don’t have to go insulting me!” Nora’s eyes almost rolled into the back of her head. “Literal density! Not intelligence. You’d be one of the densest objects in the universe! Speranza would have to be a gravity well, holding on to everyone and everything!” “So it’s just magic then,” I replied airily, knowing that would make her even more annoyed. “Magic.”
“Where do you think you’re going?” Oliver asked the instant I crossed Relias’s barrier. “Don’t scare me like that!” I twitched angrily. “At least have the decency to show yourself first!” His form coalesced slowly. “Relias placed that circle on the ground for a reason, you know.” “Didn't you say this area was clear? And I’ll be back shortly, so it’s no big deal.” “What are you going to do?” “Answering the call of nature,” I snapped. Oliver cocked his head to one side and listened for a moment. “That owl isn’t talking to you.” “What?” “Unless you’re after the mice she’s stalking. Then she has many unflattering things to say.” I groaned. “No, that’s not what that means…” “Another saying from the next world?” he sighed. “It should be pretty obvious!” He frowned. “Well, to me, it is not. Just tell me what you’re up to.”
