We do daytime culture brilliantly in Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown, but our night-time offering could be - and used to be - so much better. We’ve gone from 500 late-night venues nationally down to just 83 and the Stillorgan ward has lost its two local late venues in the last 15 years. Today, the Give Us The Night campaign is once again calling for a timeline on 6AM opening hours for clubs. It is incredibly disappointing that despite endless government promises, we are still waiting. I support the Give Us The Night campaign. The government needs to stop stalling and start delivering on night-time economy.
Research is not a ‘gig economy’ Green Party responds to Trinity funding loss Following the announcement that up to 150 research positions at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) are at risk, the Green Party has called for a fundamental overhaul of the Government’s approach to research funding. Speaking on the immediate uncertainty facing researchers in Ireland, Green Party Spokesperson for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and Councillor for Stillorgan, Eva Dowling said: “Research should not be treated like a ‘gig economy’. The situation at Trinity College Dublin is the direct result of a fundamental flaw in how the Government treats research, science and innovation. Successive ministers have prioritised short-term 'ribbon-cutting' exercises over building a robust, world-class research ecosystem. I have written to the Minister asking that he engage with the affected research staff, universities and unions urgently. The ongoing uncertainty in the science community is unacceptable. ” Green Party Leader Roderic O’Gorman TD added: “Ireland punches above its weight when it comes to excellence in research but we cannot build a sustainable knowledge economy on a precarious funding model. Countries we admire like Denmark and Switzerland have built thriving indigenous research, startup and enterprise sectors with: strong doctoral pipelines; deep public-private collaboration; and a national commitment to translating research into home-grown companies. To make this possible we need a robust, sustainable long-term commitment to funding research across all disciplines, making research a viable career path for graduates in Ireland.”
Good news: the Cabinteely Greenway is approved! This will mean a safe off road route for commuters, school kids and everyone to walk, wheel or cycle from Cabinteely to Cherrywood Cabinteely Park will also have summer opening hours year-round with gates opening 6am-10pm. Bad news: half the route was chopped from the route despite our best efforts to compromise What's next: as detailed design is ongoing for the greenway before construction, I will be working with our engineers to look for road safety improvements in Cabinteely and Cornelscourt that address the issues raised by residents during the consultation.
