In Hamilton, people who live near steel plants and the city's industrial sector have long voiced concerns about air quality and pollution. Numerous east-end residents have reported an increase in the amount of black soot they're finding on their properties, pets and children this year, and the City of Hamilton has asked residents to share concerns. Goncalves said that relative to steelmakers in places including Japan and India, the levels of carbon dioxide emissions coming out of Stelco Lake Erie or Cleveland-Cliffs's other facilities "are very good." Cleveland-Cliffs is used to operating near residential areas and does so in Cleveland, where Goncalves himself lives, he said. "We want communities to understand that we also generate jobs. We generate wealth," Goncalves said. "But we are not going to do that at the expense of [the] health or air quality or water quality of the neighbourhoods that we operate in." Participants will hear from manufacturers, researchers, industry, environmental organizations and regulatory agencies.
Conclusion: A Call to Action The industrial sector has historically been referred to as “hard-to-abate.” And although the challenges are real, that understanding is changing. The market for lowcarbon materials such as green steel and low-carbon cement is growing. The technologies that producers have available to them to initiate these emissions reductions are being proven at commercial scale. There are innovative deep decarbonization solutions in research and development, attracting new talent to solve these challenges. Whereas the transition will take time, the next few years are vital for building the momentum needed to propel the economy forward over the coming decades. This Blueprint lays out federal actions that would support decarbonization of U.S. industry in line with the U.S. longterm strategy, while ensuring the greatest realization of co-benefits are achieved to strengthen economic prosperity, health, employment, and security across the country. Successful implementation of the programs already in progress, increased interagency cooperation, and a detailed plan with continued private sector engagement are the next steps for putting this Blueprint into action.
