If Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell had voted to convict Donald Trump during his second impeachment trial in 2021, the immediate consequence would have been a surge of political momentum for a subsequent, separate Senate vote to permanently bar Trump from holding future federal office. While a conviction required a two-thirds majority (67 senators), McConnell's vote to convict would likely have influenced a substantial number of the 43 Republican senators who voted to acquit. If 17 Republicans had joined all 50 Democrats to convict Trump, he would have been found guilty. Following a conviction, a simple majority vote (51 senators) could then have been held under Article I, Section 3 of the Constitution to disqualify him from holding any future "office of honor, trust or profit under the United States." This would have legally prevented Trump from running for the presidency in 2024. However, because McConnell and 42 other Republicans voted to acquit—primarily on the grounds that they believed the Senate lacked jurisdiction to try a former president who had already left office—Trump was cleared and remains constitutionally eligible to run for office.

Currently, the official world record is held by the Moroccan flic-flac spider (Cebrennus rechenbergi) which can hit speeds of 1.7 metres per second when it is startled, using a rolling-tumbling motion. American psychologist John Gartner believes the president suffers from “malignant narcissism” – a term coined by German psychoanalyst Erich Fromm to explain the psychology of Hitler and others. The theory is it keeps growing, like a malignant cancer. “It is the most serious personality disorder a human being can have,” Gartner tells this masthead. “There are four components to it,” Gartner explains. “The first is narcissism: all that grandiosity and megalomania and wanting to be worshipped and feeling entitled to everything. The second is paranoia: feeling victimised, that people are ripping you off, and demonising anyone who opposes you. The third is psychopathy: a criminal personality and antisocial personality disorder. Someone who lies, cheats, steals, violates other people’s rights, has no conscience and no remorse.” The fourth component? Sadism.
