Much like our asshole human acquaintance, these products have malevolent souls and they are eminently capable of causing real and lasting negative emotions in people. Perhaps no single piece of software has the same outsize impact that one obnoxious person might have, but the cumulative effect of all these product interactions gradually becomes something directly comparable. It’s more insidious, because we don’t really notice it happening moment to moment. But try to think back… When was the last time you had to change your address or phone number across all your online banking and shopping accounts? Which sites required you to update your password for no reason? Which ones sent a security code via email or SMS that didn’t arrive in a timely manner? Which of the sites had an impossible-to-navigate menu structure with a nagging chatbot that was worse than useless? Which sites pressured you to take a tour of new features, tried to get you to commit to changing a setting, or goaded you into doing something you didn’t really want to do? How did you feel after enduring these experiences? How do you feel right now, imagining the hypothetical world in which you have to do all that over again?

"In plain terms, everybody is being fucked with constantly in tiny little ways by most apps and services, and I believe that billions of people being fucked with at once in all of these ways has profound psychological and social consequences that we’re not meaningfully discussing.

i need to figure out a better name for this but i refer to it in my head as "systemic responsibility outsourcing without compensation"

this is not:
- running a decision by a manager, someone with a primary job responsibility to make and be accountable for decisions, that earns a corresponding salary

this is:
- someone asking a coworker to 'double check' their work every time they submit a PR/report/write an email/respond to stakeholder

- someone repeatedly submitting low quality/inaccurate work that will incur additional work costs (tech debt, loss of team credibility, time spent correcting others) on coworkers if not addressed immediately/prevented

- a website that previously used to be reliable now providing information that requires a manual judgement call and/or sanity check from the user each time, lest the user want to risk Something That Could Be Really Bad Happening (If Something Bad Happens It's On The User For Not Checking That One Time)

- someone who splits chores in half with their roommate asking said roommate to just let them know whenever they need to do their chores and what needs to be done

(compensation in the last scenario would either be dividing the mental load, or acknowledging it as additional work and adjusting the balance of chores accordingly)

unfortunately, because of race and gender stereotypes out of my control, as well as probably some brain-work-funny stuff, i have a great deal of lifetime experience with this theme.

i do know the appropriate ways to handle these situations both in and out of the workplace, but that doesn't make it less infuriating to deal with. also, i can't talk to an app's manager in a 1:1 and explain the mental processing costs it's now outsourcing to me and how it's causing a reduction in my actual productivity. or get paid more for using it.
