My Cat Pitter, mostly great cat with a white stripe on her forehead, white area around her nose, and white paws, under the area rug in the living room. The young boy is Elián Gonzalez a Cuban migrant that was center of a custody dispute between family in the US and Elián's father in Cuba. The Clinton administration sent in INS to take the child back to his father in Cuba. The entire right wing and GOP decried such authoritarianism and federal overreach of the situation and demonized INS & other federal law enforcement agencies. The entire situation is complex & I cannot do it justice in this space.

It is not simply the death of Michael Brown that is causing this anger, it is that Michael is but a point in a long and endless line of murders, of police brutality, of have to be endured, unendurable offenses.
You Shoulda Listened Perhaps it is the era, the Obama era, that is making so many well meaning liberal white people ask why Michael Brown had to die. Perhaps it is the consciousness of the moment, the internet, more black public intellectuals, more camera phones, that are bringing this chaos into the homes of people who never have experienced the anger of Ferguson's sons and daughters. Perhaps it is none of these things, and even though the media is alert and active in Ferguson now, that doesn't mean the focus will remain.
