Text Reads: Yet it seems to me as though absolving one female character of villainy by replacing her with another seems a bit of a cheap, unsatisfactory trick. I’ve seen the same one pulled in the recent abundance of “feminist” retellings of Greek women in myth, all willing to throw Helen of Troy under the bus. All that inspired me to do was write my own feminist retelling of Helen, where even Aphrodite’s actions are rendered understandable. I argue here even villainesses are more interesting when they are understandable.

Why, then, are the interventions that are available so stymied. Why are we consistently told how little is known and offered treatments that must come out of our pockets for treatments that our medical professionals cannot say with any certainty will offer relief? Why is medical menopause, of the various types thereof currently available, not to mention the procedure that would remove parts of our internal system that have ceased to work, held back from us at every turn? The reasons I personally have been given against either a medical or chemically induced menopause, or any surgical intervention, is that the decrease of estrogen in the body would put it at risk of both cardio and osteo decline. Needless to mention again: I am going through perimenopause, a condition defined in large part by its significant fluctuations and dropping of estrogen on a monthly fucking basis. I will mention that the rise of concerns were never noted as my husband navigated his journey towards gender transition. None of my transgender male friends have been blocked from transition on the same basis that I and others like me are denied autonomy over no longer experiencing such high and ongoing levels of untreated distress (although, of course, there are other significant barriers faced by the trans community as a whole). Testosterone in women as a treatment is overlooked as part of the options for Hormone Replacement Therapy. However, it is reduced testosterone in women through the menopausal transition is responsible for some of the most distressing symptoms suffered, inclusive of: • dysphoric mood • unexplained fatigue • change in sexual function • reduced libido • changes in cognition • bone loss • decreased muscle strength The amount of testosterone required to alleviate these symptoms is insignificant, and certainly not enough to cause transition. So why isn’t it talked about? Why is it rarely something offered? Why are doctors so focused exclusively on estrogen and progestog…
Text reads: I am a person assigned female at birth who has autism, and I am just one individual in a generation who grew up in the 1990s when autism was viewed as a ‘boy’s disease’. During that decade, and the ones to either side of it, it is now understood by the medical community that women presenting with autism were severely underdiagnosed. Like many in that generation, I am currently of an age that means I am undergoing perimenopause. In the book titled The New Menopause by Mary Claire Haver (2024), Haver bluntly outlines the medical community’s response to what, in as recently as the 1990s, were termed “Whiney Women”. Struggles with perimenopause and menopause are well known and not new. Early in the above text, Haver offers a list of 60 symptoms commonly reported as being commonly suffered by those experiencing perimenopause. When I attended my local gynaecologist in December 2025—after a 9 month wait time, during which I underwent numerous invasive procedures to rule out any other cause for these symptoms I reported—I attended with two thirds of this list, or 40 of these individual symptoms. In the first study to explore how autistic people cope with the “menopausal transition”, Rachel L. Moseley, Tanya Druce, and Julie M. Turner-Cobb outline the ways in which menopause has been found to be a source of increased discomfort and distress to those who also have autism. Both “When My Autism Broke” (2020) and the follow up study “Autistic women breaking the silence on menopause” (2021) led by the same research team, offer comprehensive interviews that, between them cover the following themes: • the journey towards autism being recognised in adulthood • lack of menopausal awareness • symptoms and their impact • ways in which neurodiverse menopause differs from the norm • amplification of autistic presentation due to menopause • sensory heightening and executive decline • disparity between professional versus patient expertise
