i love it when horror is a memory not in a "it was all in their head" or "it was mental illness" kind of way (although those can be elements of the horror in question), but instead the act of transforming trauma, societal injustice, guilt and other negative feelings and phenomena into a supernatural manifestation of memories of past events. a house haunted by memories of its inhabitants, guilt and shame transforming into a spectre eternally tormenting the protagonist, repressed trauma manifesting as obscure cryptids or creatures from local folklore, tragedies and misdeeds rendering a previously safe space tainted by the horrors committed and witnessed within humans and humanity creating their very own monsters
