Turning from individual practice to an ethos or ethics, a spotlight was shone on Experiential Game Design (Betonhalle, 15.05 12:00-12:30) by Farfama, a game artist and curator behind Exhibit:Play and the GÆMZ Tokyo outpost. The key conceit of Farfama’s presentation is that AAA game studios adhere to studio logics that parallel the Hollywood film industry, with certain restricted moods inherent to conventional cinematography and professional standards that can flatten aesthetic creativity. The use of ARRI Alexa 35 cameras might be compared with proprietary in-house game engines like EA’s Frostbite, both are highly specialised and will produce a certain effect. Against this narrowing Farfama argues for experiences that are equate to cinema and its more polyamoros history, think German Expressionism, the French New Wave and Gene Youngblood’s writing on arthouse Expanded Cinema (1970). Alongside indicative references to games such as Moshe Linke’s Fugue in Void (2018), Kristallijn (2020) by Gaël Bourhis, Exophilie (2023) by Death Orgone (aka Frédérick Maheux) and Yuha’s Nightmare. Episode One: Catastrophe (2026) (A MAZE. Exhibition) from Super Experience, amongst others, Farfama puts forward an extensive catalogue of creative variables that game developers can tinker with and employ to devise unique atmospheres. Sampling from the twenty-eight factors included, a short list includes more corporal qualities such as kinaesthetic, cohesion and attensity (a term coined by psychologist Edward Bradford Titchener in 1924 to denote the capacity for attention separate from perception) as well as design aspects like pacing, VFX and narrative. (Boring, 1934) There is also the interesting inclusion of history, a sense of the weight of the world preceding your entry into it.
