PORT CHICAGO MUTINY 1944 An important stepping-stone in the long, long road to American racial equality. In 1944. 320 men were killed and another 390 iniured when two ammunition ships blew up at Port Chicago near Sar Francisco. Over two-thirds of the dead were black navy seamen assigned tc bomb loading on the ships. Fifty blacks refused to return to work after the lisaster, because whites were given leave before returning , but the leave did not apply to them. They were court- martialled and imprisoned until the end of the war. Their actions led to the end of overt segregation in the US armed forces from 1948, but most of the mutineers were not cleared until the 1990s
