The description of a setting and brief lead in to a story. The text is as follows: The Exarkan Empire once spanned an unfathomable section of the galaxy. Hundreds of thousands of worlds were under its yoke. At the helm were the Exarkans themselves, a species of parasites whose sentience arose from sentient victims, whose minds were irrevocably destroyed and bodies altered with new organs that enabled Exarkans to spread themselves to new hosts sexually. The Exarkans ruled ruthlessly, exterminating countless species, and warping many more into tools for further subjugation. The Empire was known for debauched hedonism for the select elite, while the rest of its subjects toiled in squalor. But almost as quickly as they ascended to power, their Empire collapsed, and the Exarkan race vanished from memory. All that remains of their Empire are ruined abandoned world-palaces, derelict space stations and vast floating graveyards, the remnants of hard-fought battles against their tyranny. More than a millennium has passed since the galaxy was under the boot of the Exarkans. They are little more than exaggerated fairy tales to the few aware of them. Fortune seekers and foolhardy young people occasionally make forays into the world-palaces and broken fleets; the lucky ones escape with their lives - centuries-old biotechnological systems are more often faulty. And in a secluded sector of space, where the Empire germinated so long ago, a woman awakens on a partially functioning ship, with no memory of how she got there, or much of her life before that.
