Field notes, on cause and effect.

Shari had brewed the potion from a book she found in her own shop. Someone, at some point, had shelved it between Practical Pottery for Patient People and Potent Portents for Potent Personalities, where it had remained unnoticed long enough to acquire a respectable layer of dust and several new ecosystems.

The title was Practical Potions for Practical Problems. The recipe promised stress relief. Shari followed it exactly. The colour was correct. The smell was correct. The taste was correct. The potion even fizzed in the prescribed manner. Everything, in fact, was correct right up until the effects arrived.

The problem was that the potion appeared to have interpreted "stress relief" as "removing uncertainty." Several months earlier, Shari had worried about the possible consequences of an evening which had, upon careful review, never actually occurred. (Another potion she had acquired from Nyah had a hand on that at the time); The potion solved this dilemma by ensuring the consequences existed anyway.

The book was infuriatingly silent on the matter. No warnings. No side effects. No helpful chapter entitled What To Do If Reality Takes A Creative Interest In Your Personal Life. It merely stated that effects lasted twenty-four hours.

Shari knew enough about magic to find this deeply concerning. A headache could last twenty-four hours. Blue skin could last twenty-four hours. Talking backwards could last twenty-four hours. A pregnancy, however, was not so brief of a temporary condition. Magic always demanded payment, and once something had been brought into existence it tended to develop strong opinions about remaining there. Things sold could not easily be unsold. This was true in ordinary commerce, and doubly true in the Night Market.

Which left Shari standing in her shop with a bottle of the remaining potion in one hand and a rapidly expanding list of questions in the other. Neither was proving especially useful.
