fern k hahn @fernkhahn.com · Mar 11 it's fun (read: frustrating) to compare with this nice staggered junction in vancouver. the flashing green indicates that this functions as a regular two-way stop, keeping the arterial flowing, until a pedestrian requests to cross it. pedestrians can cross the side streets at any time. so simple.

BC's half-signals are just wonderful, i think. functionally, they're HAWKs in a more intuitive and familiar (i.e. safer) form. unlike flashing yellow crosswalks, they can account for a minimum green time, and drivers are actually compelled to respect them. i would love to see them adopted elsewhere!
