Southern hemisphere. Bundjalung Country in unceded Australia. Sanctimonious vegan. Knitting (Portuguese style), visible mending, sashiko, paracord. Wise words to live by from a friend: “Snacks always help.”

We look over a very short brick wall into one side of a front garden in a residential property. There is a white-painted brick wall facing into the yard, behind a tree with thick branches and green leaves, and lots of greenery in the yard. This is not an ordinary brick wall. The wall has quite a number of bricks covered in colourful tape, or painted in a variety of colours. We can see the main part of the wall was originally white, and the tall ‘post’ edge of the wall at the street side (shared with the neighbour) was deep yellow. Scattered across the surface are so many colours and designs with the white simply as a background. Some bricks seem to be painted: orange, forest green, deep yellow, sky blue, navy blue, light purple, pale pink, deep red, mint green, cobalt blue. Some are covered with what appears to be either decorative adhesive book covering, or perhaps wall paper, peeling off at the edges: white with a blue paisley-like floral pattern, or geometric small black and white checks seemingly cut up and placed randomly to completely cover the brick, various sizes of square shapes in blue placed systematically so that larger squares are in the middle and tiny squares nearer the outer sides, grey florals and curvy patterns, yellow spots against white, part of a large yellow flower, dark grey small zig zags across the length, tiny blue flowers, vertical blue stripes, and white, blue, and pink scallops in a tight line. Some of the painted bricks have stripes of reflective tape in yellow, blue, red, and white stuck on to cover the entire brick, some around the outer edge, some placed in careful geometric patterns. The tree itself has also been treated to this magical makeover, and we see that much of the truck was painted in yellow, with stripes and patches of other colours mostly worn (or grown) away so that the patterns are now mostly unrecognisable, with other splices of stripes and colours of red, green, blues, pink, up some of the main branches.
We look down low at a fire hydrant, so that it looks tall. It’s night time, but we see the mostly cloudy sky in the background, with fuzzy patches of dark night sky showing through the cloud. The white, metal fire hydrant is the main feature, taking up most of the left side the image. It has a red top on it, rounded and shiny. The white body is straight, dirty and rusty, as well as having an illegible graffiti tag in black paint pen spilling down most of the lower part. The top third of the main body joins the bottom part with large rusted bolts. On the bitumen path closest to us, we see a small deep yellow plate set into the bitumen with crossing diagonal lines across it, and the upside down word ‘gas’ in capital letters. Dirt and plant detritus fill the indented parts of the plate, and tiny green plants seem to be growing well around the edges. An empty road surface stretches beyond the hydrant with a white triangle painted on the road pointing towards the hydrant. Further across the street we can see a short, light brown brick wall with an unpainted wooden fence on top of it. In front is another bitumen footpath, with determined greenery growing between the footpath and the gutter. To the right we see a concrete path leading into the distance with parked cars lining the left side of the street, and a power pole with a street light on it, lighting up the cars below it. Just before the parked cars is a yellow, diamond-shaped street sign with a flat line in black with a hump on it, to indicate a speed hump ahead. A smaller, rectangular sign under it shows a 20, and ‘km/hr’ under the number to suggest that 20 kilometres per hour is the speed to use over the speed hump. Trees and bushes line both side of the narrow street, dark green in the low light, and brighter green where the street light falls. Everything is lit up quite well, and shows in sharp contrast.
We see a pale yellow wooden gate with upright palings that have a bulbous top with a small peak atop each bulbous part. The palings grow in height from the outer edges to give the gate a domed shape. The top of the palings are worn, revealing a previous colour of pale pink where the yellow has worn away, as well as showing that the edges and insides may have missed out on the yellow paint job. The two tallest, middle palings each have a black number attached near the top, showing that this house is number 18. The gate butts up against a red brick wall where only the top two layers of brick show as red, and the others below it are either painted a very pale colour, or perhaps white washed. Threaded unevenly around the palings and in front the horizontal piece of wood behind the gate that supports the palings, we see six long, greyish-silver, conical bells hanging from twisted, white rope. One assumes that the bells will jingle when the gate is opened and closed. Behind the gate and the top of the brick portion we can see vivid green plants and a peek of a blue decorative awning above a darkened verandah.
We look north-east across a large intersection at a closed down furniture store on the corner of two often very busy roads. The entire lower half in the image is the bitumen road, and the upper half is an old building built in 1892. Under the eaves of the shop, the section above the windows are emblazoned with the name of the Melbourne-famous future seller, Franco Cozzo. The large ground level windows of the building are full of graffiti, but on the first window left of the corner, we can see a very clear reflection of a shop directly across the road that appears to be a bridal store. The corner section of the building is painted white, with the upstairs level having several sets of three windows with pointed arches with tops painted dark grey, and small decorative wrought iron fences that look like they could be tiny balconies if the windows were opened. The section of building that continues to the left of the Franco Cozzo building changes colour to creamy orange, white, red, then cream as we follow along to each different shop below it. The orange and red sections each have a tall, peaked roof, and a third level with a window in that space. To the right of the main corner, the building continues to be white, but is less ornate with plain rectangular windows having no wrought iron ‘balconies’, and lots of graffiti along the wall. In front of the corner building are two sets of traffic lights, at the point in time where both directions are showing red lights. A small black or dark blue car is on the left, stopping at that side of the intersection, while a lighter blue car has gone across the orange or red light, and has almost reached the other side of the intersection. The sections of road seen to the direct left and right of the view of the photographer, and also across the other sections where pedestrians cross, is painted a pale orange between two white, dashed lines.
On a plain white, metal fence the words ‘Free Gaza’ are spray painted in black paint. We see the fence at a slight angle from the left. The fence itself has two horizontal rows of unevenly placed rusted screws (holding beams of some kind behind the fence panels, I assume). At the bottom of the fence is a black bitumen footpath with a couple of small bunches of green weeds growing at the base of the fence, which have some dried leaves collected in and around them. If we look closely at the bitumen near the fence, we can see some green moss growing on the black surface.
We look east across Grantham St, directly at a vertical pole across the middle of the image, which holds the parts of a pedestrian crossing. Behind the pole, not the focus of the image, from left to right, we can see the following: a Telstra phone box with a slightly faded red roof, a tall deep red post box, part of the logo on the shop front awning of an Australia Post, part of a traffic light with red lights, a person dressed in black, waiting to cross, and above the shop awnings, heavily graffitied outer surface done in bright colours. Behind the buildings is a bright blue sky with some fluffy white clouds, and black power lines across the blue of the sky. Close up, in focus, we see the top part of a button for people to press to register they are waiting to cross. This part shows a silver arrow against deep blue, with a smaller arrow in relief on the large one. Above this large protruding part (below the offical instructions from Vic Roads about being safe while crossing) we can see a holographic sticker with black printed on it to show the holographic words: ‘Be kind, do nice things!’

It looks like it’ll be for a very, very tiny dog, but it’s just squished up on the needles. I hope it’ll fit because I’m not knitting it to gauge as I’ve used thinner yarn, so I’m guessing the size to knit is the large to fit my small doggo. LOL!

On a dark, wooden table, we see a notepad and some alcohol markers. The notepad pages are held together with a clear plastic binder on the right side. The used part of the notebook ja folded back so that we see just the one page. It has 48 colours on it in wiggly, horizontal lines, roughly in rainbow sequence, from the very top to the very bottom. The colour stops just short of the holes on the left edge where the paper is held by the binder rings. Between each colour is a solid black line where some parts of the wiggles are made thicker in smooth, tiny hills and valleys. Behind the notebook we see some of the markers lined up in the same order as what’s on the page, but from left to right. They are white with a grey ring where the lid connects to the main body of the marker. The ends facing the camera are in colours to show which colour each marker contains.

Where the stars are connected at the points, they cross over each other just a small amount so that there is a diamond shape made where they intersect. Even where there is no intersection on a star (such as the three outer points of the six outer stars) there is a small diamond shape on each point of each star. Each star has lines going from the outer point across the middle to end at the opposite point. There is also another line going from the inner corner where the points meet, again going to the opposite inner corner. This appears as 12 spokes passing through the middle of each star. However, the spokes on the stars do not pass through the diamond-shaped intersection of the points of the stars, so these diamond points become a bit of a feature. The spaces between the stars form a small hexagon, which is another feature that stands out. Across the rest of the page, we can see lighter pencil marks where a grid of triangles was drawn to guide the shape of each star. Each group of triangles forms a hexagon with the short side of the triangle making half of the line of the outside of each hexagon. Alternatively, it could be made up of lots of kite shapes joined together at the points. This image description is possibly entirely too detailed. LOL! 🤣

The main body of the tea towel has a large, tall diamond pattern in yellow that stops at the edges of the flower, and the border stitched around the edge of the tea towel is done with a colour-changing thread of red, orange, and deep green.
We see mostly just the hands of a white person holding up a strip of white cotton fabric that has had the ends sewn together to form a loop. The fabric itself is featureless.

A postcard sized piece of art paper is painted with really colourful, rounded shapes. Some look sort of like planets, with various shades of mottled colour from one side to the other. There are also some heart, leaf, and bean shapes on it. Many of the small shapes have embellishments with metallic pens of various colours drawn on or around them. The piece is an absolutely joyous riot of colour and shapes, and I adore it. 🥰

A narrow strip of mustard yellow fabric lies across a mid-grey couch. The fabric has burgundy sashiko stitching along it, and grid and lines markings done in coloured markers. It’s a series of square diamond patterns (formed with crosses and lines) divided by three dashed lines between each diamond. The middle square diamond is larger and is made up of four smaller square diamond shapes, the two edge ones of which are empty.
On a dark and light wooden table lie two heavy brown paper strips. The one at the top has cuts and sticky tape and looks a bit like one of those long slides for young kids at an amusement park. The one underneath is one plain strip of paper that has the more severe curves of the other one made more gentle. Both pattern pieces have a straight arrow with two right angle bends on them pointing to one edge of the pattern (which means ‘cut on fold’), and the bottom piece also has ‘final collar’ written on it in pencil on all capital letters. Scattered around the two pattern pieces are a green 5cm circle template, a pair of utility scissors with black handles, a black clutch pencil/lead holder, and a black eraser wrapped in white cardboard.
