I peered down at myself to find my arms were longer, three clawed fingers gleamed in the room’s pale light on each hand. My tail was thicker and lashed behind me. The reflection staring back from the mirror was not mine at all but also entirely me—black fur, gleaming stripes, and eyes that glowed like the moon itself. I felt my wings flutter at my back, massive and strong, yet incredibly light weight. Using muscles I was not accustomed to having, I tried to move them and to my disbelief they obeyed. Stumbling back, the weight of it finally crashed into my awareness. I tried to speak but no words came out, just a strange chirping noise. My breath caught in my lungs as my reflection in the mirror was massive, monstrous, but it was me. Flexing my claws, I watched them curl like they belonged to someone else. My tail lashed again, restless, alive with its own pulse. My chest rose and fell too fast, the sound of my breaths a low growl that vibrated in my throat without permission. How do I change back? I thought to myself. The panic in me was rising and I wished more than ever for Nox’s reassuring presence. Am I going to be stuck like this?

Skylar’s lips curved into the faintest smile as he settled into the chair across from me, folding his hands neatly in his lap. “I wanted to update you on the stasis patients. We managed to stabilize another seven today. Kryta has devised a system to keep their bodies properly nourished while they remain frozen in time. It’s working, for now the corruption seems at a stand still.” I nodded, though the weight on my chest didn’t budge, I made a mental note he hadn’t mentioned names. “And the others?” His expression dimmed, hesitating. “We…we lost the other three. The corruption spread too quickly for me to intervene. I’m…sorry.” I swallowed the lump in my throat. There weren’t enough apologies in the world to fill the hole those words left, but I knew it wasn’t his fault. This Fae male had no reason to come all this way, to offer his help to a problem that wasn’t his concern. And yet here he was all the same.
