Frances Klein EN ROUTE TO THE FOLLOW-UP MAMMOGRAM There's a whole spring day hidden in the vocal run Whitney Houston does as she's leaning into the chorus of "How Will I Know." The car window is down on the first truly warm day of the season. Whitney's plaintive O's spilling over each other to fly toward that no-cloud blue that arcs above the ocean. behind the mountains. There's warmth and movement in that voice, sweeter than the iced coffee that is weeping sugary drops on the test results. The puddle it melts in the cupholder leaves a sticky remnant I'll remember the day by when winter shivers back into prominence all too soon. But forget about that, I won't think about endings yet. not when the yellow flags of skunk cabbage are waving from the roadside, and fingers of air streaming over the car tease at my hair, and Ms. Houston is saying her prayers.

Once upon a time on a wet spring day the jordhorse (a) was born onto the unswept floor of a modest stable; (b) awoke orphaned in a field of hyacinth; (c) was conceived on the mahogany writing desk in the personal library of Gustavus Adolphus; or (d) sprung from the calving head of a blue glacier. When the fjordhorse was nary a foal, he (a) pulled graveyard doubles in the local horse mill; (b) anonymously composed, in a single night, Selfie with Poppy (1628); (c) as the world's foremost, and thus court-appointed, cetologist, advised the queen on all matters ambergris and whalebone; or (d) invented bitcoin. Of course, everyone knows about the year the fjordhorse spent in the well carving a peony field by feel in the pitch black. Can you correctly identify the tool or tools he used?: (a) chisel: ebony-handled, white steel, of Japanese origin; (b) water and breath; (c) hot knife: electric, cordless; or (d) single dandelion spore. The fjordhorse has been described by his holiness the fourteenth Dalai Lama as (a) "a divine amalgamation of water, light, and sun"; (b) "a little bit cherry coke, a lot laughter"; (c) "all hard-scrabble and hummingbird"; or (d) "singing bowls filled with winter lake water at first light on the shore of said winter lake". . If you answered (a) to any of the questions above, congratulations, you are a Scorpio. If you answered (c) two or more times, you are an unapologetic romantic who consults pressed leaves in beautiful but inaccurate medical dictionaries. The man answered (d) once and died. Please do not answer (b) as it is not an acceptable response, for the age of the stars was long ago pinned to their spin.

Even then, it's been long enough that I'm not sure she'd recognize me. She pouts, parts her lips to take a furious puff: a real diva.
