On Saturday, federal immigration agents killed one of those health care workers, an ICU nurse named Alex Pretti. STAT’s Megan Molteni attended a vigil Sunday at the spot where Pretti was shot. Tony Rush Being a sane American right now: it's like the United States is riding in the back-seat of a car and Dad is driving drunk. Mom is the Republican party, riding in the passenger seat: she knows Dad is completely sloshed but she goes along with it because she's afraid of getting beaten up again if she says anything. Some of your brothers and sisters are excited because they like carnival rides and think speed and chaos is entertaining. But you feel slightly insane because you're the only one in the car who understands the danger everyone is in and no one seems capable of stopping the maniac at the wheel.

Angry because the first day he was on the job he chose to use the available legal resources of the Justice Department not for arresting, but instead investigating and gathering legally usable evidence first. Angry for him not publicly broadcasting details of that investigation just because it would be prejudicially tainting the potential jury pool, even among other reasons not to blab. Angry for him building a solid case on a foundation of previous convictions for a failed insurrection that doesn't seem to be mentioned in the applicable laws that were enacted for a successful insurrection. Angry for him waiting for months while the January 6th committee delayed handover of testimony from witnesses to compare with previous statements from those witnesses given to the Justice Department to avoid the risk of having those key witness statements thrown out later for inconsistency. Angry for when he asked postal inspectors to gather evidence the FBI wouldn't. Angry for him not immediately firing people shielded by protections needed to ensure political independence. Angry for him taking the actual time it takes to investigate, gather, and analyze evidence that would withstand the scrutiny of the judicial system. Angry for him not revealing to the public there were confidential grand jury deliberations. Angry for him holding to the long standing procedures meant to insure fairness. Angry for him putting up with lower court delays from overloaded dockets and a judge indulging frivolous delay requests. Angry he let the Senate not impeach 45, twice. Angry for him letting the Supreme Court delay judgement for nearly eleven months and ultimately putting a president above the law. Angry for him letting a general loose cannon obstacificate, slow walk, ignore precedents Florida district judge conspire with a single supreme court justice to give a free pass by ending a prosecutors solid case.

ABA We speak today on behalf of the legal profession and its members who seek to live by the oath each took upon admission to the bar. This is not something we do lightly nor is it the first time we have spoken in opposition to actions against an administration, regardless of political party. We sued or opposed policy proposals of the last few administrations when they failed to adhere to the rule of law or interfered with access to justice, and we are doing the same with the current administration. We are nonpartisan. We stand for the rule of law. We stand for the vital role of our courts and the essential job that lawyers do every day throughout our country. We have stood on this ground for many years. We reject efforts to undermine the courts and the profession. We will not stay silent in the face of efforts to remake the legal profession into something that rewards those who agree with the government and punishes those who do not. Words and actions matter. And the intimidating words and actions we have heard must end. They are designed to cow our country's judges, our country's courts and our legal profession. Consistent with the chief justice's report, these efforts cannot be sanctioned or normalized. There are clear choices facing our profession. We can choose to remain silent and allow these acts to continue or we can stand for the rule of law and the values we hold dear. We call upon the entire profession, including lawyers who serve in elected positions, to speak out against intimidation. We acknowledge that there are risks to standing up and addressing these important issues. But if the ABA and lawyers do not speak, who will speak for the organized bar? Who will speak for the judiciary? Who will protect our system of justice? If we don't speak now, when will we speak? The American Bar Association has chosen to stand and speak. When they go low we must go higher. We need to defeat them as we are, as we choose to be, otherwise we become them. A murderer is not a hero. No number of wrongs can make a wrong the right thing to do. We cannot condone murder and still remain a people, a nation, a community of laws. Don't give in to despair. Don't give up who you want to be, who you really are to become the same as those you rightfully despise. Do stay true to yourself, pay attention and oppose inequality. Do oppose oppression of marginalized people. Do argue against unjust laws. Do demonstrate ethical behavior because it's the right thing to do.
