I use this trick all the time in my games! In XTRIS, the board state is updated instantly, so players can tap as fast as they want and always score a point without wait frames. But the animation runs on its own "layer", allowing me to squash, stretch, and create interesting animations!

function tween(from, to, step) local dist = to - from if abs(dist) < 0.05 then return to end return from + dist*step end local val = tween(val, finalval, 0.1) this will animate fast at first and slowly approach the destination. Very cheap but nice looking tween for PICO-8 and Playdate
