Screening the Flow of Smartphone Communication: Sociolinguistic Perspectives on Digital Temporalities Florian Busch, Assistant Professor Institute of German Studies at the University of Bern June 10, 2025 12:00-1:30pm MIT Anthropology Classroom, Building E53, Room 354 Smartphones enable social actors to initiate, pause, or resume communication at virtually any time and from almost any location, embedding mobile communication in a wide range of everyday social practices. This workshop takes the ongoing Swiss research project Texting in Time: Communicative Practices of Smartphone Interactions in Process as a point of departure to explore the sociolinguistics of mobile communication, with particular attention to the temporalities and rhythms of everyday messaging.
Der Beitrag widmet sich den metapragmatischen Diskursen rund um Zeitlichkeit und Rhythmus in der Online-Dating-Kommunikation. Wie viel Zeit vergeht, bis eine Nachricht nicht nur gelesen, sondern auch beantwortet wird, wird gerade in Kontexten sich anbahnender romantischer Beziehungen als Metazeichen interpretiert. Vor diesem Hintergrund liefert der Beitrag eine Analyse chrononormativer Ideologien, auf deren Basis Akteur:innen Rhythmus als kommunikativ bedeutsam konstruieren. Der Beitrag zeichnet anhand der Diskurse in Lifestyle-Magazinen, Online-Foren und YouTube-Videos nach, welche Diskurspositionen den Umgang mit Zeitlichkeit in der digitalen Liebeskommunikation sozial valorisieren, in welcher Weise temporale Normen verhandelt werden und wie Rhythmen soziale Indexikalität zugeschrieben wird. Der Beitrag argumentiert für die Beschäftigung mit der Zeichenhaftigkeit von Zeit und weitet das diskurslinguistische Interesse an Kommunikationsideologien auf metatemporale Diskurse aus.
