This isn't really a critique, cuz no meaningful game exists in which to score points against this NYT bestseller book-shaped object, but reading an entire text aloud is a way to know it intimately so now I have close-danced with this bizarre artifact and I gotta tell my diary about it! The narrator is an amnesiac human of no particular age, mysteriously transported to the game, who has to figure out how to survive alone in Minecraft from first principles. They therefore know much less about the world's rules than my 7yo (the intended audience) but much more than me (the truly naïve one) to whom their mystical leaps of technical insight and their childish inability to focus are both so inexplicable the book would be fascinating if it weren't so freaking repetitive and unclear in direction, just like watching someone else explore a video game

9:30 PM: The streets are cold, empty, and brightly lit. I know these blocks so well.
8:30 PM: It's been so long since I cared for such a little baby - she's so sweet and easy, it's hard to tear myself away.
4:30 PM: Joss and I drive to visit my sister and her husband who just had a new baby! Elly decides to stay home with Lea.
11:30 AM: I paint while my kids play Minecraft. "That was a good landing!" Joss keeps saying. Ely is creating a library of enchanted books.
7:30 AM: I wake up in our guest room - with a fresh concussion I'm trying to get the deepest + longest sleep possible. So far, so good - this is Day 5 and I'm managing to care for myself with gentle rigor + still work like normal, though Lea is taking on a lot of extra parenting.
