Annalee @flowerhorne.com · Jan 15 QR codes encode text. They are most often used to encode URLs, but they don't have to. They can just encode plain ol' fashioned text. And they're decoded locally on your device. There's no need for a server call to decode a QR code. Try it out: put your phone in airplane mode, then scan this.

A QR code is essentially a fancy barcode. It represents data in a format optimized for machine readability. These days you can also point your phone at plain text and copy it, which is exactly what's happening when you point your phone at a QR code.
