A Past that isn’t Mine Browsing the internet, I slip into a backrooms-esque space, Filled with disconnected isles, with life gone without a trace. Indexes of artifacts gathered from galleries long gone, Snippets and pieces of past lives, written and drawn. My wayback machine, the only way to explore, Through many closed portals, and dead links galore. Some monuments stand still despite time, Someone’s homepage, marked copyright 1999. How I wish to be here, over two decades ago, To talk in these forums, seeing users move to and fro, To follow the blogs of pioneer internet writers, This archaeological dig, for me an all nighter. But I know my time here, simply can’t last. To me it feels like now, but reality keeps it in the past. A past that isn’t mine, how I wish it weren’t so, IRC and abandoned webservers, many places I can’t go. Usenet and newsgroups, formerly bustling with life, Now filled with spam, or closed from drama and strife. To think all of this data, from before I was born, What can I do with these remnants, except just mourn? Because as time goes on, I know more will be forgotten, Especially now, with AI making human work trodden. So here I sit still at my desk, the sun rising behind me, Knowing that someday I too will be part of this history. And eventually forgotten, as all things will be, So let us enjoy the present of writing this grand story.
