In between NYC subway stops I glimpsed some unusual graffiti. It seemed to be the story of a young chef’s disappointment; his chocolate-avocado cake idea appears to have been stolen by others, and brought him neither money nor acclaim.

A New York Fire Department alarm box lies on a city sidewalk, probably hit by a vehicle or pushed over. Fire boxes can be used to directly contact the FDNY re fires and other hazardous emergencies. There are still over 15,000 fire boxes in the city.
Standard green construction fencing at an empty lot on Crescent Street, Queens. Behind the fence the lot’s a tangle of weeds. Def got the royal touch.
A passage in The Lives of the Caesars describes Nero’s construction of the Golden House. Its interior included a 120 foot statue of Nero himself.

The thick trunk of a willow tree. Its bark is sinuous, otherworldly. One of those small, rescued lots that greens the city.
Next to the Jefferson Market Garden is the Jefferson Market Library, formerly a courthouse. It was converted to a library in 1961. This has to be the grandest & most opulent of New York’s public branch libraries, with rugs on the floors, comfortable seats, and if you’re a NYT crossword kind of person but don’t subscribe, you can pick up their free daily printouts. Again, a startling contrast to its earlier iteration.
Midtown shoe store opened in the 1940s. Custom & corrective footwear. Still around on 39th Street. Nice old sign; the blue “L” in MOULDED has slithered down onto the “O” in SHOES.
The cover of the hand-made book shows the title, The Brooklyn Public Library, and a blue silhouette of a tree. The library and Prospect Park are adjacent to each other. Both feature in Edgar Oliver’s book of poems, prose and drawings. Oliver is a well-known writer and performance artist.

The Greater Scaup is a medium-size diving duck with a pale blue bill. The Bufflehead is one of the smallest North American ducks.
