A pictographic table showing the Hynek-Vallée system of classification for UFO encounters ("A classification system for anomalies"). The horizontal axis consists of encounters of the first, second, third, fourth and fifth kinds: Sighting, Physical Effects, Living Entities, Reality Transformation, and Lasting Injury. The vertical axis consists of level of the encounter fron Anomaly (AN), Fly-By (FB), Maneuver (MA) and Close Encounter (CE). A variety of circles, squiggles, saucers, lightning bolts, and stylized human and alien stick figures denote the precise action of the encounter. For instance, a Fly-By of the Fifth Kind features a zooming saucer hitting a human with a lightning bolt.
