An excerpt from my first draft of Magic and Ash From Magic and Ash Chapter 3 The Duke came closer, staff still in hand. He touched the diamond to my forehead. I felt a violent flash of heat. It rushed through my body and left me feeling exposed and violated. The initial flash subsided but I was left with a burning deep in my bones. I felt the hairs on my body stand on end. Just as the magic subsided the heat flashed again and I was left with an ache that wrapped around me like a blanket.

Snippet from my wip Magic and Ash: Logan threw the rock at me overhand. I kept my eyes on it as it left his fingers. The green energy swirled around me as I lifted my hand. I willed it into an invisible shield. The rock hit the magical barrier and was sent flying at an odd angle. It soared up into the sky and crashed into the side of the carriage parked by the stairs. I winced. Lilly clapped her hands together excitedly. The world began to spin around me. Violet stepped in and supported my arm so I didn't fall over. "I think she's done." "I didn't actually faint this time." The swelling pride of deflecting a rock outweighing my urge to pass out. After a minute the world settled down and I could stand on my own. "I want to do it again." "No way," Violet said.

An excerpt from draft zero of my story Magic and Ash: She closed her jade eyes, I found myself looking at the fine hairs of her brow and the slope of her nose. The rounded pout of her lips when she was concentrating. I closed my own eyes and felt for her. I found her green energy and immersed myself in it. Like lowering myself into warm bath water. absorbed every bit of it I could find. Like a magic sponge. It wasn't enough, there had to be more. It flowed through me into her. I felt the rain stop. I opened my eyes. Violet's were still closed. The rain fell steadily all around us. An invisible umbrella deflected the rain and held it at bay. It pattered and swirled above us. "Violet," I whispered. She opened her eyes. A wide grin spread across her face and crinkled her eyes. I leaned in closer. She didn't move back. My lips found hers. Just a peck. I pulled back but Violet pushed in seeking me. Her hands in mine pulling me closer. We kissed again, her lips soft but demanding. The magic broke and the trapped rain fell all at once.

"We desperately need to address this whole fainting thing," she said.

I opened my mouth to speak but she held a finger out. "I do not wish to hear any excuses dear. You must have known we would enchant the wrapping to tell us if it was disturbed." I felt a breeze from something running past. In the shadows to Ms. Catterwick's left I saw a glimmer of two jade green eyes. Like the cat I had as a child. My lips curved into a grin. Ms. Catterwick lifted the gun. "Is something funny? You are in breach of contract." She clucked like I was a bad child in need of punishment. "It's a shame really, you were very good at your job." She sighed and pulled the trigger.
