As I was gathering up the stuff from this photo, my cat opened the door and came outside. (It's an inside cat.) In my haste to get her back inside, I dropped Shipwreck's gun. After about 5 minutes of searching, I found it in a sunny patch of sidewalk. So, this photo almost cost me about $50.

Snapshot of WAR values between '84-'89, Mattingly's peak. He was the 5th best player in baseball during this stretch behind Boggs, Henderson, Ripken and Raines. And, Tony Gwynn was right behind him. If Mattingly had a normal decline, he's probably have a moderate HOF case. But, it's tough to really look at him as ever being the "best" player in baseball...much less for an extended period of time.
