If I am a bigoted proponent of the inequality of blacks, women and homosexuals straight white males, I need not necessarily appeal to the denial of contingency by invoking a metaphysical theory about the true nature of human beings. I could, also, when it came to philosophy, be a pragmatist. A bigot and I can say Foucauldian/ Nietzschean thing: that the only real question is one of power, of which community is going to inherit the earth, mine or my opponent's. One's choice of a community for that role is intertwined with one's sense of as a competent audience. The fact that there are no mutually unintelligible language games does not, in itself, do much to show that disputes between racists and anti-racists, democrats and fascists, can be decided without resort to force. Both sides may agree that, although they understand what each other says perfectly well, and share common views on most topics (including, perhaps, the recognition of contingency), there seems no prospect of agreement on the particular issue at hand. So, both sides say as they reach guns. it looks as if we'll have to fight it out. My answer to Wellmer's auestion about whether our "democratic" and liberal principles define just one possible political language game among others is "yes, if the force of the question is to ask whether there is something in the nature discourse which singles this game out." I cannot see what other force the question ...

I am not a Luddite. Al and robotics have enormous potential to improve human life. But they also pose profound dangers that we have not fully confronted. Left unchecked, these technologies could lead to The rise of an unaccountable global oligarchy. The richest people on Earth - Musk, Ellison, Bezos, Zuckerberg - are not investing trillions in these technologies out of generosity. They want more wealth and power. Car democracy survive when a handful of multibillionaires wield unprecedented influence over the economic and political life of our nation? Massive job loss. There are economists who predict the loss of millions of jobs as a result of Al and robotics. What happens to workers when there are no jobs for them? How will ordinary Americans survive without income? How will they pay for housing, health care, food and other basic necessities? Increased social isolation and mental illness. Young people are already turning to Al "companions" for emotional support. What happens to our humanity when people interact with machines more than they do with their fellow human beings? Total invasion of privacy. If every phone call, email, text, search, financial transaction and movement can be tracked by the owners of Al, is the concept of "privacy" made obsolete? Does this not inevitably lead to authoritarianism? Higher likelihood of war. If robot soldiers replace human beings, wil leaders be more willing to engage in catastrophic armed conflict? Will we see an "arms race" in robot soldiers? Environmental degradation. Al data centers require enormous amounts of electricity and water. So, the smarter an organism is, the more food it needs, or it dies. Evolutionarily speaking, it is stupid to be smart. We do not have a good understanding of exactly how our neural hardware grants us abstract intelligence. We do not understand how ‘brain makes mind’. But given that more intelligence requires more brain mass, which results in more metabolic costs, one would expect us to have the lowest possible level of abstract intelligence required for surviving in the precise ecological niche in which Homo sapiens developed: the barest minimum intelligence needed to scrape through a few million years of hunting and gathering until we got lucky and stumbled into the Neolithic Revolution.
