FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: July 21, 2026 CONTACT: media@freedcproject.org Statement of solidarity with organizations and individuals targeted by Trump’s State Department Washington DC — Yesterday Donald Trump’s Department of State published a new report that targets 43 elected leaders, unions, and political organizations by name. In response, Free DC issued the following statement: “Trump wants people who disagree with him to feel divided and afraid and that’s clearly what this list is about. We refuse to take the bait. “It seems like Marco Rubio might be distracted by those shoes that are too big for him. For heaven’s sake George Floyd is listed here. Other people on this list include lifelong public servants, people who have spent their lives working for justice, and at least one person who has perfected the art of chocolate ice cream. Between war with Iran, escalating crises in Ukraine, Palestine, and Venezuela, starting a trade war with Canada, and accusing China of election interference, it seems like the State Department should look in the mirror and address its own problems.” “This list includes several organizations here in our DC community. We are in steadfast solidarity with local organizations that fight for Black Lives, the DC chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, the Claudia Jones School, the National Lawyers’ Guild, and Medea Benjamin. Fear cannot divide us.”

We particularly appreciate your public direction that Michigan personnel were deployed to support these specific events and were not to participate in the Trump administration’s broader “D.C. Safe and Beautiful” mission or general law enforcement operations. That distinction is important. Temporary assistance for a defined national celebration is fundamentally different from participation in an open-ended federal operation involving military patrols and law enforcement support in District neighborhoods. The July 4th and America 250 celebrations presented significant public safety and logistical challenges and required coordination across multiple jurisdictions. We are grateful to the Michigan Guard members who left their homes and families to support the nation’s capital during this exceptionally busy period. Now that the event-specific mission for which Michigan personnel were deployed has concluded, we respectfully ask that you recall all Michigan National Guard personnel as soon as practicable and decline any extension of their current deployment. We also ask that your office confirm the anticipated date of their departure, the current number of Michigan personnel remaining in the District, and that they have not been reassigned to neighborhood patrols, general law enforcement support, immigration enforcement activities, or other components of the broader federal operation."

But last week we found out Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer has joined them and deployed 109 members of the Michigan National Guard to assist with Trump’s hostile occupation of DC. She did this right before DC’s local elections last Tuesday.
Trump wants to control DC because he is trying to end free and fair elections in this country and entrench his own power. Up until now, only Republican governors have been willing to aid and abet his plan.
