But the forces that created today's chaos won't just go away. There is no return to "politics as normal," whatever that means. In a few weeks' time, Democrats will control the White House and both houses of Congress. They will hold this control until 2022, at which point history tells us they will lose one or both chambers, perhaps by big margins. So: there is a two-year window in which a foundation to reverse these trends can be laid. Aggressive action must be taken, and it must be taken regardless of whether Republican members want to support it. From the outset of the 2020 campaign, I opposed Joe Biden's nomination on the grounds that he does not understand the moment of crisis we are in, and in any event has none of the temperament, inclination, or base of support necessary to meet the moment even if he did. This is his opportunity to prove me wrong. I hope he does. The clock is ticking.
